Brian Wilson, Beach Boys, and more

Phil Spector attacks Brian Wilson

April 26, 2007 -- NOT a single music superstar came forward to support "Wall of Sound" producer Phil Spector as his trial for the murder of blond B-movie actress Lara Clarkson kicked off yesterday - and it's not surprising, considering how he bitterly trashes many of them in an upcoming biography.

Mick Brown, author of "Tearing Down the Wall of Sound," out in June from Knopf , interviewed Spector - who produced The Beatles, the Ramones, Ike and Tina Turner and the Righteous Brothers - just weeks before Clarkson was shot in the face at his sprawling mansion outside L.A. And Spector didn't mince words about the biggest acts in pop and rock history.

* On Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys leader and songwriting legend who battled mental illness for years, Spector declared, "I don't feel sorry for Brian Wilson. I never thought he was that talented to begin with . . . I'd be more impressed if somebody with a brain idolized me."

Wow, I never thought Spector would be an asshole like that. I bet Brian would be extemely flattered and grateful if Spector said he liked his work. Foda Phil Spector!!!!!!

Can't say I'm that surprised that someone who's capable of murder would be such an asshole. So many talented artists seem to be entry-level human beings.

Hello,
The absolutely amazing experience of watching Brian for the first time on his 65th b'day in Belgium was topped by an astonishing 'spontaneous' moment in the concert, when Brian led the audience in a short-lived canon of a nursery rhyme. Was it 'row, row the boat'? I can't remember.
Thanks
Love

Tony.

Yes, he does do Row, Row, Row Your Boat in concert. Spector's music is definitely good, but Brian's is better.

Spector did some great work but managed to ultimately alienate almost everyone he ever had dealings with.
Not surprising the bitterness, he was an inspiration to guy who he never a mentor to, Brian who was clearly a superior innovator and was genuinely nice, if somewhat fragile guy. He also used a whole host of people to realize his vision while Brian was more self contained, i.e. actually wrote most of his hits
Spector has basically been a has been from 1970 forward living off his past accomplishments and the money has managed not to pay people over the years.
The book probably will be remaindered inside a year, not enough people really know who Phil is or what he's done anymore to be a real sales performer.

I get the sense that Harvey Phil Spector is incredibly unhappy as a human being. He lives in a castle with a wife who screams to me "opportunist," he has alienated so many talented musicians because he felt he "made" them and they are nothing without him. He surrounds himself with sorry syncophants. I wonder if this guy has any true friends. If he does, I haven't heard of them, unless they are paid to be. The tragedy of a suicidal father and an emotionally abusive mother have controlled this man throughout his life. He so desperately wants to grasp at any control he can have, where in reality, there are no longer any buttons he gets to push, levels to check, or musicians he can berate. Such a talent has gone to waste.

I always thought Spector was way way WAY overrated. The wall of sound was always just noise to me.

Terrible production in my opinion.

Terrible crime and terrible wig too. Freak.

What Brian did with Spector’s “wall of sound” is analogous to what Andy Warhol did with a can of Campbell soup.

Anything goes with Spector, anything he
feels at the moment to boost his own ego.
This nonsense about Brian Wilson being
a non talented rip off of him is just so much
horse dung!
Brian is the heir to Spector's concepts after Spector lost touch with his own genius!

Maybe if Spector wrote and produced something as good as Pet Sounds, then he could talk

To tell you the truth, I'm pretty shocked from what I read. And saddened. Could never imagine Spector saying something like that about Wilson. Always thougt there was some kind of mutual respect-thing goin on between them. I just bought the Spector box "back to mono". I'm seriously condering trading it in now for something else. Brian Wilson is more talented and brilliant than Spector. All Spector did was add some castanettes and tamburines and sleighbells, whereas Brian invented a whole new sound that lay way ahead of his time, as a matter of fact, we haven't caught up yet! I liked Spector, but in the light of this recent attack on Wilson, I just lost all respect for the guy. It's obvious he's jealous as hell of Brian. Spector couldn't handle the fact that a guy, way younger than himself, had actually exceeded him in talent as well as INNOVATION.
