Brian Wilson, Beach Boys, and more

Al's Least Favorite Song

Al Jardine names the Beach Boys song he least likes to perform.

Follow up:

Is there a song that after 40 years you just can’t stomach?

(Laughs.) Its all about making them new all over again. And sometimes that can be difficult ... I’m recording an album right now, my first solo album. I’m using guest stars such as Steve Miller, Glen Campbell, Brian Wilson, to name a few. We completely rearranged “Help Me, Rhonda” for Steve Miller, for instance, for his blues style. And it’s a lot of fun re-creating these things. When we come down with the Surf City All-Stars, we’ll sing them in the vintage fashion. The way you remember them.

As a corollary, is there a song that continues, even after 40 years, to touch you or move you in new and different ways?

If you can imagine hearing “Surfer Girl” for the first time, for me that still has that poignancy — that and “In My Room.” Those vintage classics always tug at your heart. I guess to answer your other question, the one I’d least likely to ever want to do again is “Barbara Ann” (laughs).
