On the Life of Brian boot CD4 track 2. There is a recording of a radio interview by a Sydney White?? (6.43) into the track, with Brian on aussie radio round about 1974?? This interview gets you into where Brian mind was at the time (Not a clear place to be) but makes for a really interesting listen Brian still sounds like the old Brian from the 60's no hint of the guff post 75 Brian And you hear Marilyn answering the call first before passing it onto Brian. But my question is this what is the date the interview is made?, And at the beginning the DJ says "Me again, Look I want to ask you some more question" is their more of this interview knocking around??, I will quote some of this interview to jog some memories
DJ: Firstly Brian alot of people down here are really into the Beach Boys. And well we haven't hear too much of what Brian Wilson has been up too, apart from the fact that you been in the studio. So could you tell us what's been happening with you in the last couple of months or so?.
Brian: Ok well Sir err in the last couple of months I've been doing very little music at all haven't been writing or (Slight laugh) performing any music. I've been taking it easy, Taking vacation round the county, Have not been writing or performing any music at all for the last couple of months. I do plan to in the future to  work on a couple of songs for the group and that is if I can come up with any ideas I've have not really got into music at all at this time.
DJ: What was the last recording that you was involved with the Beach Boys Brian?.
Brian: Well the last recording we worked on a couple of songs about three or four months ago, that we did as an experiment I can't remember I can't remember.
It's quite honest and very Brian and I would like any more info on this please many thanks.

Haven't heard it (but sure would like to, hint hint...). Sounds really interesting. Did he really say take a vacation around the county as opposed to country?

Sorry yes I'd mean around the country my bad LOL
The interview further on goes on about the Endless Summer album and Brian's thoughts on it at the time. To say it's interesting to hear Brian's reaction is a vast understatment!!!
I will quote some more from this interview in the morning (I'm from the U.K.) But does anyone have any more info as to the background to this interview please.

More from this interview....
DJ: One thing I would like to ask you the Endless Summer double album, of course has been out in America and gone to the top of the charts and if you wouldn't mind I'd like to just maybe from your point of view jog your memory and just about a few of the tracks, Cause the people down here would like to hear well the man who created some of the songs and some of his thoughts on the songs. So If we could go go over a couple of tracks with you maybe that will be alright with you?.
Brian: Ok (Sounds happy)
DJ: If we could go way back and take you way back to Surfin' Safari, What do you feel when you hear a song like that say it's been reactived in the States, how do you feel when you turn on the radio and bang there it is, what kind of feeling do you get?.
Brian: Oh it's sort of one of being lost in space kind of in a place, thats you know hard to determine in time I get sort of a feeling of lost in space in a very very giant vacuum of space and music.
Doesn't anyone know anything about this interview (Dates, etc) or shall I just put up the whole transcript for us all to read Smiley

Well, if the mention of Endless Summer going to the top of the charts is accurate, the interview has to date post June 24th 1974 (the release date), more likely post October 5th, when it actually hit #1 in Billboard. If the interview was towards the end of the year/early 1975, the sessions Brian's referring to could be at Caribou Ranch.

Thanks Andrew I was just looking at your site and come to more or less the same line of thinking cheers. So the interview must be very late 74, early 75 Smiley

I'm pretty sure its after the Caribou Ranch sessions, since I'm pretty sure he mentions "Child of Winter" and "It's OK". So its probably late 74 or early 75.

Ok Here's the full interview. any comments or any points of interest within this interview would be welcome...
Phone ringing......
Marilyn: Hello?
Runner: This is Syndey Australia, Calling for Mr Brian Wilson please
Marilyn: Who's calling please
Runner: Mr White(?) in Sydney Australia
Marilyn: Hold on please
More ringing....Phone heard being picked up
Runner: Ok Brian Wilson on the line Go ahead
DJ: Good thank you Hello
Brian: Yes Sir
DJ: Hello Brian
Brian: Yes Sir
DJ: Me again, listen I do apologize once more for ringing you again out of the blue like this again. But we wanna make a good program out of this so we thought it was the only thing we should do really you know?
Brian: why don't you go ahead and wail my name up there (DJ laughs) Just say that this is Brian Wilson talking and I'll just do an interview with ya (DJ really laughs at this) Ok then?
DJ: Fine look we'er taping it now so...
Brian: Oh good
DJ: Firstly Brian alot of people down here are really into the Beach Boys. And well we haven't hear too much of what Brian Wilson has been up too, apart from the fact that you been in the studio. So could you tell us what's been happening with you in the last couple of months or so?.

I've been taking it easy, Taking vacation round the country, Have not been writing or performing any music at all in the last couple of months. I do plan to in the future to work on a couple of songs for the group and that is if I can come up with any ideas I've really really not tried lately, and have not really got into music at all at this time.
DJ: What was the last recording that you was involved with the Beach Boys Brian?.
Brian: Well (sight sigh) the last recording was that we worked with was a couple of songs about three or four months ago that we did as an experiement I can't remember, I can't remember.
DJ: Do you find that you know you said that your running dry of ideas Is it very frustrating for you during these periods at all?.
Brian: A little bit it gets a little frustrating, I do have a couple of things err... so err... that I feel...that ...err...we..The only other song I can think of is ... err ... That we'er working on at the time is...errr.. Would be...ohh .. Come on, come on ...ohh .... errr ....Oh excuse my language.
DJ: Thats all right
Brian: God I wish I was more prepared about the music we'er working on ... errr ...
DJ: That's fine really because honestly the people of Australia just wanna actually hear Brian Wilson and just found out  what's been going on. And One thing I would like to ask you the Endless Summer double album, of course has been out in America and gone to the top of the charts and if you wouldn't mind I'd like to just maybe from your point of view jog your memory and just about a few of the tracks, Cause the people down here would like to hear well the man who created some of the songs and some of his thoughts on the songs. Brian: Oh it's sort of one of being lost in space kind of in a place, that's you know hard to determine in time I get sort of a feeling of lost in space in a very very giant vacuum of space and music. It's almost like a mass contest of music in my mind, But only very little of this I can project outwards. Like I'd said the songs we'er working on now are sort of.. believe me or not of the time..err of the right qualification of what I did use to do because I've gotta away from it for so long (I can't get the last few seconds of what Brian said sorry!!)
DJ: Do you think it would be hard to say today for you to try and sit down and write a song about for instant about a hot rod or maybe a song about the beach? Would you find it hard to recall the old style you use to write with?.
Brian: Well err It would be sort of difficult for me to sort of.. to stick.. to get my face.. stick my face all the way into working on a another song for this time because I have so many discretions and other various forms of responsibility that I'm holding down at the time that's it's rather difficult to get into top 40 music for me now, Althought I could.

I haven't heard this for years.  (Still have it on a cassette somewhere!)  In addition to the transcript here, I recall Brian mentions Child of Winter, and attempts (not very successfully) to quote some lyrics from it ("something about a derby....a derby on his head").  The whole interview is very odd - and maybe the first really stark evidence of BW's 70's 'meltdown'.

Any other interviews with Brian worth knowing about between Holland and 15 Big ones???.
It seems to me that and maybe I'm wrong but between 1973-76 are pretty much "lost" years sadly for Brian when his personal problems overtook his life and his family Sad

Yes - Jim Pewter, 9/1/74 on KRTH... actually, it's pretty much the only one. It ends somewhat abruptly, as I recall, after Pewter plays "H&V" followed by "California Saga: California", apparently because Brian got very twitchy and walked out of the studio. Chunks were later printed in Who Put The Bomp - here y'go:

Great interview! Probably my favorite opener to any BW interview:

JP: Brian, let's talk about your first record; I believe that was in '62?
BW: Oh, I forgot we were doing an interview! I was looking at the picture over there.

And I love the picture the guy put in that blog post.

I love that '74 Jim Pewter interview. Brian's recollections are sharp and he's in very good spirits - if somewhat distracted (and apparently feeling no pain). You can hear that his voice has already lowered somewhat, but it's got none of the rasp and phlegm that would show up the following year. Makes me long to hear "California Feeling" and "Lucy Jones."  Smiley

LOVE this quote...

BW: It shocked me. It did very well, and we didn't expect that to happen. I think that was November of '65 when they released that. We had potato chips and dip and other stuff around for the atmosphere. Box guitars, a stand up bass, and drums. Whew!
JP: Brian, what kind of dip do you like, do you like onion?
BW: I love onion. French dip, that’s the best. French onion dip or bleu cheese. Do you like Fritos or that kind of stuff?
JP: I don’t like dip with Fritos as much, I’d rather have a big potato chip with onion dip on it.
BW: I love that, God, I love that…

Well like I'd said before in the "Lost in space" Interview Brian still sounds (At least to my ears) like the old classic 60's Brian. And Brian in this Interview sounds quite happy during the interview too. I guess it's one of these things that when you hear because it says alot more than my transcripe ever can. But you can tell that Brian was on a good day that day, and not on any drugs too (I think?)
