The ending to "Leaving This Town" is probably one of my favorite moments in the Beach Boy catalog. A perfect example of how powerful Mike Love's voice could be.

Have you ever noticed that 90% of the Beach Boys songs end with a simple fadeout?  Sad

(Actually, I'm saying "90" because there must some be exceptions... But I can't see any  Huh )

And for the great endings, I suggest "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen. "Any way the wind blows..."

"lonesome tears" from beck's sea change (best album of 2002, btw)   Cool Guy

"I Heard Her Call My Name" by the Velvet Underground.

That also has a wicked beginning.

That also has a wicked middle.

More Who - Song Is Over and Bargain from Who's Next (again!) are both brilliant endings - Moons drumming on SIO (well, both actually) is wonderful.

Radiohead's "The Tourist," where it builds up to this great, emotional climax, then everything gets stripped away, before the song (and album) abruptly ends with the sound of a tiny bell.

That's my favorite ending. Throughout the whole of OK Computer you're in a trance, lost betweenst the music that's playing. Speechless and motionless you sit through its entirety, the swooning ballad from Johnny Greenwood is the last beautiful moment heard. It's a song about a car crash, or the stupidity leading to one, when --- DING! ---the chime of a bell. Was that the accident? Airbag starts up again, (Granted you are on the repeat setting) and you're once again saved.

Off the memory card:

1. "Strange World" (the whole song is great, but the ending is like totally another level)

2. "There's a Girl", Jan & Dean (never was a fan of this, however, there's sth. innocently beautiful about the tag vocs)

3. our friend Mike Leroy's version of "I'll Bet He's Nice". Just listen to that.

4. "Don't Come Around Here No More", Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (aside from Tom miming monkey voice, the ending is epic! The best bit of the song imo, love that guitar solo/background one-note drone & when the pace of the song gets faster)

5. "Seasoned Greetings" by The Residents (one of my faves by this unconventional group, it is eccentrically warm, esp. the simple "Merry Christmas" speech, right after which, however, we hear grand piano stomps. Very cool)

6. "Strawberry Fields Forever" (that cuckoo-gone mellotron)

All for now.

David Bowie- Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family. It's also the best album ending ever (I think).

Prefab Sprout's "Mysterious" - a really haunting repetition until an abrupt end, very different from the tone established by the album 'til that point.
Neutral Milk Hotel's "Sailing Through".
