The story I remember is that Brian was obsessively recording and rerecording vocals for the song and carl finally got fed up with it.

They could have all been getting fed up with it. But Mike is the one who told Brian that they'd wasted enough time and money and they weren't going to be singing Ol' Man River anymore. or at least that's what was in the Carlin bio.

Cool. I haven't heard much about the history of Ol Man River. Did Brian have a similar obsession with this tune as he did with Shortenin' Bread? How many different versions or takes are out there? I've only heard the twofer version and the Hawthorn version.

Dude! Great work... again! I've listened to many tracks on your youtube channel. It's uncanny! You have the most authentic sounding beach boys vocal blend out there in my opinion.

I asked Stephen Desper this on the board, and he said there might be something approaching an hour of OMR tapes in the vault. Mostly of it at the faster pace.

Someone needs to do a punk version of the Brian arrangement of Ol' Man River. Downtune the guitars, key of Gb. Go for it.

Is it just me, or can anyone else here not get enough of Old Man River? especially the faster version.

I love the voices, the production. Brian had hit a real sweet spot in this era, homemade and lush and glowing with soul. I would pay a lot of money for a one hour CD of Old Man River.


IMO, the instrumental on the new Gershwin album, the horns in particular, sounds a lot like a section of OMR from the Friends/20/20 twofer.
