Grammy Nomination(s)?
«
on:
December 01, 2010, 07:35:57 AM »
I believe that the nominations for the Grammy Awards will be announced today. While I would like to believe that
BWRG
will be nominated for any of the major categories, in reality I don't see this happening.
However, there are a few other possible categories
BWRG
could be nominated for.
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album
,
Best Pop Instrumental Performance (Plenty Of Nuttin')
and possibly
Best Jazz Vocal Album
being the most likely.
Your thoughts on this, if any, are appreciated.

I would think a nomination would certainly be in order. Whether it gets beyond that .......
However he is said to be up against such heavy hitters Ennema Em and Miranda Travis Paisley.

You are correct.
Apparently the Grammy voters were less than impressed with
BWRG.
No nominations of any kind.
I guess they didn't need to release it early here in the USA after all.

The Grammys have always been a joke. Let's not forget that they chose "Winchester Cathederal" over "Good Vibrations". Say wha?!?

They are mostly a joke, I agree. But the added attention it would've brought BWRG would have been a nice, deserved bonus imo

Am I right in saying that Disney had the album remixed by Al Schmitt because of his Grammy wins (even though the mix wasn't too different from Brian's original mix)?
And that the date it was released in the US was a few weeks before the Grammy deadline?
I'd love it if the Disney covers album got nominated in several categories this time next year

Pretty disappointed by that, actually. I think it's a great album and seemed to me that it'd be nominated for at least
SOMETHING

I'd say the lack of Grammy nominations for BWRG is proof positive that the album is above the quality of the items that have been nominated this year. I think we all agree. Let's leave it like that. I'd say Brian already got slapped in the face with his one Grammy (Best Rock Instrumental Performance on a tune with wordless vocals...YEAHHHHHHHHH).

Or losing against Ray Charles in "best vocal" or something like that.....

I agree with that and with the sentiments expressed about the Grammy Awards in general.
Still... I can't help feeling somewhat disappointed.
It would have been nice to see Brian get some recognition for his fine work on BWRG.
After 50 years in the biz he has just one honorary Grammy (for being a member of the Beach Boys) and one for best instrumental (Fire) to show for it.

Unfortunately not at all surprising. Sometimes the Grammys get it right, but it speaks volumes that arguably the most celebrated living American songwriter didn't win a non-honorary award until 2004 (and for an instrumental, at that). It's even more insulting that he gets passed over in favor of a Rod Stewart or Barry Manilow album that for some reason, the record buying public continues to eat up.
Sadly, I get the feeling that Brian's next Grammy won't come until after he's passed on (hopefully not for a long time, obviously) - unfortunately, putting out an album then passing away almost assures you a win.

Thanks for sharing that link. I remember watching this presentation live back when it originally aired and being surprised at how slim Brian was. I love how Dennis can barely hold his contempt for Starland Vocal Band winning the award and I imagine Carl had his song "The Grammy" starting to percolate in the back of his mind. Brian's on-stage movements are a masterpiece of obstruction!

I think maybe it's more of a backlash against classic artists doing cover albums of oldies (Hello Rod Stewart)
But I agree the Grammy's are a joke! Didn't the Beatles wait to get their first Grammy for "Let it Be"?
This is from the B104 Rock Report
http://b104fm.com/music-2/the-rock-report-2/
CLASSIC ARTISTS SECURE KEY GRAMMY NOMS
Plenty of classic artists held their own when the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were announced this week — with Paul McCartney, Elton John, Neil Young, Eric Clapton and the Doors‘ Robby Krieger all in the running for various awards. Jeff Beck was clearly a favorite with Academy voters, scoring noms in such categories as Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, and Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Beck’s former Yardbirds bandmate Jimmy Page feels that Beck’s influence cannot be underestimated: ["He's been instrumental in pioneering a whole blueprints that was totally unique to him for everyone else to learn from. I mean, no one's ever equaled what Jeff's done, but he's -- he really shifted the whole sound and face of the electric guitar music, y'know?"] SOUNDCUE (:16 OC: . . . guitar music y’know)
* Paul McCartney’s live rendition of the Beatles‘ 1968 White Album classic “Helter Skelter” faces stiff competition from new songs by Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Robert Plant in the Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance category.
* McCartney’s current live show is by far the hardest rocking set he’s played since Wings’ lone North American tour back in 1976. Rusty Anderson, who’s been McCartney’s lead guitarist since 2001, recalled how the band finally got McCartney to finally add “Helter Skelter” to the setlist: ["I was working on Paul for 'Helter Skelter' since the first time we played the Super Bowl, before we even went on tour (in 2002). I said 'Hey, y'know what would be a really rad song to play, Paul?' He said 'what?' I said 'Helter Skelter,' and he goes (imitates McCartney) 'Oh, yeah' (laughs). It took him a while to warm up to it. And we kept prodding him and prodding him and he put it in the set -- but we still hadn't rehearsed it. We said, 'Paul are we gonna rehearse 'Helter Skelter?' And finally we did it. .. and I remember playing it at rehearsal and some of the pre-show dancers started coming out and dancing and rocking to it and all of a sudden he started realizing how great it is."] SOUNDCUE (:34 OC: . . . great it is)
