Goldmine is a magazine to which you must subscribe, if yu want to find it, in my experience. I haven't found any place that stocks it anymore;  more and more dealers are dropping the service that carries it, at least here.

I too have always loved the Moody Blues. To me they were a true "band" and came off as adults. I have had the good fortune to have seen them live throughout their long career. From the old days at Fillmore West and Winterland to just last year. They still have their voices. I do miss Ray Thomas. I think they still have one more great album in them.

Well, here in the UK there's something of a distribution monopoly in the magazine field, with WHSmith handling just about everything. As more supermarkets sell magazines, and chainstore newsagents dominate the High Street, small circulation specialist titles are being axed from their shelves in favour of large circulation titles that generate a greater income from the same amount of shelf space.

Not only that but magazine publishers now have to pay supermarkets and big-chain newsagents of they want their titles to have prominence on the shelves. That, or have exclusive offers for these big retailers.

That's a gamble in itself - publishers can't make much if any profit if they're shelling out for the privilege of selling their product (remember the vendor gets this money on top of their cut of the cover price); and if they do a special offer for one big retailer – say, an exclusive cover mounted gift – then readers might buy it there for a couple of months, then find that store's dropped it in favour of another magazine's short-term offer.

But when readers go back to the small independent retailer for their favourite mag, they find it's been dropped there too because the big stores had stolen the trade.

However, once we all subscribe to a title, at a vastly discounted rate from the publisher, there's no incentive for any retailer, large or small, to stock the title. At which stage the publisher can charge what they like for the title as it's only available from them.

It's a number of vicious circles eating away at each other.

A lot of paperboys will be out of work in the near future!
