Wow! Thanks a ton, The Real Beach Boy. I have a question about the Springfield 1979 show. How do you know that both Dennis and Brian are drunk? At the moment I can't remember even hearing Brian at this show. Is this the one where Dennis exclaimes "Ah, poo" through the microphone?  Grin

Is there really a possibility of some sort of legal challenge from BRI?
I don't see how offering up a list of shows that are known to exist could be seen as anything but factual reporting.
Now if you're offering to make me copies of each one....   YEAH.... I can see that bringing some heat

This is a great thread, Andrew should really think about adding a section to his webpage for this. Smiley

Lisa - it is a cool thread...

And fun to remember the "where and when" (and with whom I saw those shows) and what we we (and they) were all wearing for those shows that I have seen on the list...from striped shirts, white suits, bell bottoms to platform shoes and back...

My question is what the difference is between "soundboard" and "audience" because I know nothing about that aspect and whether it would matter for listening to those shows...

And is it all audio or is there video for some of the shows?

Audience recordings are generally relatively crude recordings made with tape recorders etc from an audience position, soundboard recordings are derived directly from the channels going into the mixer used to mix the live sound at the shows Smiley

The issue of audience versus soundboard recordings is a double-edged sword. There are situations in which audience recordings sound immaculate (think Brian on 2/24/04 at RFH, or Carnegie Hall 9/71) and when soundboards sound terrible (Copenhagen 1980, Paris 1966). It all depends on the source itself and the quality. If a concert is mired by technical problems, a recording from the soundboard will suffer those same problems. Naturally, if the person in the audience is recording on crappy equipment or is otherwise being disturbed by the activity around him/her, the recording can suffer too. And never forget the issue of tape degradation and how many audience recordings were made on cheap audio cassettes. You can usually tell the difference between a cassette recording and a reel recording - the cassette recordings can sound muffled and distorted due to the fact that most portable recorders had a shoddy built-in microphone, while reels generally have a better audio quality in general with more defined dynamics. I've heard remasters of many audience recordings and there has been a marked improvement in the sound in many cases; a 1972 gig was restored from a hugely compromised cassette and restored to a much better quality.

At a film festival where Billy Hinsche had a showing of his film "1974 - On the Road with the Beach Boys," he spoke about a process of "baking" the footage - audio would be included, I think in that area of expertise," - and you suggest a certain degradation that you mention, which would occur over time.  It is a treat to hear some of these archived shows on "Wolfgang's Vault" or some other such outlet.  But probably more important for the young people in college, studying the history of rock and roll, which is now a "bona fide" course to be able to listen to and see (if video is available) this band who blazed trails, not seen up to that point in music or even sociological history.

My sense is that their journey, and unique vocal style, influenced many of the rockers who followed, and those tapes authenticate that live process.  And if you look at the "live" list you will see historical events which run concurrently (Berrigan Brothers benefit, for example) and Carl's C.O. (conscientious objector status) and which are a mirror to those decades.  And you get a whole different flavor, to see video - which is not bad of Gaumont Palace in Paris, which, if I remember correctly, was filmed for a sort of documentary, with the subtitles.  Those tapes will help capture their unique experiences, historically, even if the tours were commercial in nature.  Thanks for your wonderful expertise and insight.  Wink

By the way-Having listened to the Seattle 1970 show a number of times-it is not true that Carl sings ALL of Mike's leads.  Brian sings Mike's part on the opening song Do It Again and Carl takes the bridge.  On Add Some Music To Your Day-that is Brian singing all of Mike's parts as well as the parts he sang on the original record.  Brian also sings Mike's parts on Good Vibrations as well as his own parts.  By the way-Brian is very involved in that show-Brian introduces the performance of Surfer Girl and then Bruce thanks him for writing it.  He sings his familiar part on the bridge. He also took his original lead (minus Dean Torrence) on Barbara Ann.

Copenhagen 1980 is a soundboard recording? Wow. Somebody didn't know what they were doing.  Grin There is also the odd audience tape where the taper is positioned close to the P.A. system(Hartford 1973).

The very first concert I ever went to was a Beach Boys show at Blossom Music Center in 1992. I believe it was in August. Does anybody know if an audio, or video, recording exists?

I have a lot but haven't played too many except for the 62-74. It's interesting that the hit or miss shows started in 1975. What stands out about the Daytona Beach Show? I know you said they sound out of it. What songs or comments do you derive that from?

It's just the performance in general. It's very relaxed. Carl and Dennis sound like they've had a beer or three before the gig. Al and Michael are obviously high on the music (read: sober). The performance is generally loose compared to what came before; it's very casual and easygoing.

The Seattle show from 1970 is really cool to hear Brian's voice, he's still got it.

I like the Beatles a bit more than the Boys of Beach, I think Brian's band is the tops---really amazing. And finally, I'm liberal. That's it.

So it's not bad in a 1978 way. I'll have to dig it up I think I have it.

TDHabib yeah Brian in 1970 was about the best he ever was after 1966. Maybe not as competitive but the work he did do was still really great. He looked good and sang great. He still had it and if only he could have not declined from there. Even his 1970 interviews were lucid.

The breaking point as far as when the shows become very sloppy is definitely January 1977 in Lakeland, FL and Largo, MD on 1/7 and 1/12 respectively. As early as late 1974, after Ricky took his leave, the shows were starting to become a little more loose. The 1975 shows in general were very relaxed. 1976 was roughly the same. By 1977, Brian's back on dope, Dennis is getting worse, and Carl is very out of it. Things really begin to spiral. 1978 is even worse. 1979 is when things really get out of control.

Other than the Australian 1978 shows, and Largo 1977, are there any other shows where Carl is noticeably "impaired"? His voice sounds quite rough at a Central Park show from 1977, but it's hard to tell if he's under the influence of something or not. How was he at the New Zealand shows from 1978?

The Seattle show from 1970 is really cool to hear Brian's voice, he's still got it.

I would love to hear this concert!
