maybe?:

pet sounds
lilys "eccsame the photon band"
cornelius "fantasma"
mbv "loveless"
brian eno "another green world"

sometimes interchangable with:

mercury rev "deserters songs"
stereolab "transient random noise bursts with announcements"
boards of canada "geogaddi"

1. Beach Boys - Smile
2. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
3. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
4. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
5. Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine

1. Beach Boys - Surf's Up
2. Pink Floyd - Echoes
3. The Beach Boys - Til I Die
4. The Beatles - Happiness Is a Warm Gun
5. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

Way too hard..
I feel like Echoes is highly underrated...it's one of my favs of Floyd.
I love to play it for friends who only really know Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall (hard to believe, I know)...they always respond: "isn't this from Dark Side?"  Grin
other pink floyd materpieces include "animals" & "obscured by clouds"

Top 5 albums?  Hmmmm...that may now be in flux due to the release of The SMiLE Sessions...but before that disturbing development, the list would have been roughly as follows:

1. The Beatles (The Beatles)
2. Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE (Brian Wilson)
3. Something/Anything? (Todd Rundgren)
4. Magical Mystery Tour (The Beatles)
5. a tie between Rubber Soul (The Beatles) and Pet Sounds (The Beach Boys)

I think I'll just disqualify box-sets and keep things easy...

Albums

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd
Abbey Road by The Beatles
The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks
Sgt. Pepper's by The Beatles

As for songs, it's way too hard. However, probably my two "desert island" songs would be Surf's Up (the 2011 version) and Here, There and Everywhere by The Beatles.

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Prince - Purple Rain
Marvin Gaye - What's Goin On
Michael Jackson - Thriller

I applaud your willingness to 'keep it safe' and name albums that are acknowledged as classics by everybody, instead of doing the tempting thing and naming a bunch of weird sh*t people might not have heard.

I gotta agree with you, those are 4 great albums through and through, every song.

THANKS Smiley when i was a child the first 3 those albums were given to me by my father, so they hold a sentimental value to me.

The lead singer of the zombies probably has the best singing voice ever in the history of music.

Blunstone is very good but as for the best ever? Jeff Buckley, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Carl Wilson would all be above him (IMO).

Talking of Joni Mitchell I can't believe I left Blue out of my top 5 albums.

Let's do songs.

1. Step - Vampire Weekend (I listen to this song like, every day. Never get sick of it. It's perfect in every way.)
2. Wouldn't It Be Nice - Was #1, but Step kicked it out of the way.
3. Australia - The Shins (always makes me happy.)
4. Let It Happen - Tame Impala... I thought I'd get tired of this song, but nope...
5. Why do we only get 5? Am I supposed to put a classic '60s song here? Can I put Sufjan here? I'll just go with this.

#4 and 5 are recent obsessions. I realize I sound like I only ever listen to those bands, but 2 years ago Billy Joel and the Head and the Heart would have made this list. We'll see what happens in the future  Cool
