Actually, some of those held notes are rather impressive.  Grin

Give the man his props, he has no problem with taking the piss out of himself. It's corny, he knows it, the crowd knows it - everyone's happy... and dammit, he's been singing the song forever. I think he's entitled.

bahahahaha. I meant no disrespect to any Mike Fans here (although as a "Brianista", I often wonder what the appeal is.) So right there, that is no matter. I shant get involved in the follies of trying to argue opinions. It shall lead nowhere.

God only knows (cue the french horn) that Brian has had some rough leads, but come on...I thought this would speak volumes for itself. People saying "Let's see how long YOU can hold a note" arguing this video is impressive in any way, shape, or form is beyond my comprehension. If that impresses you, I have no retort at all. He goes out of pitch, is very nasal, and if that pleases you, then I am glad I posted it for that reason- everyone can get enjoyment out of it. Either way, we can all like the BBs at the end of the day.

Be true to your band  Grin

He's doing it for pure cheesy entertainment value. Mike has no hang ups about being an 'artist'. That is both to his detriment and yet at the same time I repsect his "give the people what they want" mentality. I'm glad you posted the clip.

I don't know if I should applaud him for being able to hold the note for so long or cringe because it's absolutely painful to listen to.

I still laughed, though.  LOL

This is borderline mystical. I could meditate to Mike's nasal chant. It's like he dilates time!

You'd think if he could sustain a note that long, he'd be a bit of a better singer.

Also, now I'm wondering how long he could've held it in his prime.

Mike Love holding a nasal note in a medium range for a while is about as impressive as seeing a normal man eat potato chips forever.

i guess what annoys me the most is when those who recorded it act like it's amazing or something...because we all know those who recorded it prolly don't even know the song: Heroes and Villains.

I'm sure this is gonna come back and bite me in the rear when someone on here says, "hey, I recorded one of those clips."

I don't know if it's true at all, but when I saw Mike and Bruce a couple of years ago and they did this same intro, it sounded to me like there were two Mikes singing the line.  It definitely sounded as if the live Mike was being propped up by a track of Mike singing the same thing just in case he couldn't hold the note and to make it sound stronger.  Again, I have no proof of that, it just sounded odd to me.

I'm not trying to bash Mike in pointing that out.  It was a great show and the band was awesome.  I respect Mike for his contribution to the band and even for his "give teh people what they want" approach.  It's not my style, but it's a valid perspective.

speaking of Mike/Bruce arrangements over the years, I just feel sometimes they need updating.
Example: It's almost the same concept with the 'Be True' intro; the why do fools intro. Sure, it's good and cool, but I saw them do it back in 2002, and they still do it.  Now I know I'm gonna get yelled at because of the 'giving people what they want' argument we all experienced earlier, but to me, I feel like a setlist needs to be updated or have new ideas/jokes/arrangements.

That's why Brian's shows are better, each year, the setlist is a bit different.
But this all goes back to being an artist and growing...it sets the stage for a repeated history: Mike wants the basic hit recording (name any year in BB history) vs. Brian wants to grow and do different/new things...it's almost the same thing with their concerts, in my humble opinion.

Bruce should debut some of his Viagra-related humor next tour.  Grin

And since they have John Stamos, they should bring in Bob Saget to do some standup comedy for the opening act.  Grin

That *would* have been true about eight years ago. Compare and contrast: http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/6-28-08.html http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/4-12-08.html

Those are the most recent times I saw Brian and Mike's respective bands. Brian's set is a greatest hits list, almost all of which had been in his set for nearly ten years at that point, and with only one song even from the album he was supposedly promoting. Mike's, on the other hand, is half as long again and contains stuff like Forever, All This Is That, Til I Die, Good Timin', Here Today, You Still Believe In Me...

Brian's shows *in 2002* were fantastic as far as setlists went, but every time he's toured since then the sets have grown closer and closer to the touring jukebox formula (apart from the shows where he performs an entire album - and in those the first halves are just run-throughs of the hits). These days Mike's band is actually *more* likely to do something new and exciting, though if you go and see either you're most likely to get a thirty-song hits run-through...
