I don't think this is a smart move.

I'm unsure how the Gershwin material would go down in a live setting...it would possibly be nice in a theatre with a receptive audience.

Didn't Brian say just the other day that they wouldn't be doing any live dates with the Gershwin material?

I'd say if they did a regular Brian Wilson concert with some of his favourited Beach Boys material and added 'They Can't Take That Away From Me' and 'Summertime' then it would work. A more risky option would be adding the Porgy & Bess suite. Anything else would probably be too risky...though I doubt anyone here would object to any of the material being played live.

The Melbourne show is part of the Gold Cup 150th anniversary celebrations: stadium with a 19,000 capacity.

Hmmm... risky indeed. Perhaps it's to attract folks because of 'new material'? (as in: 2 new songs, as assumed above).

LOL

I saw the country group "Alabama" in concert once.  They played nothing but #1 hits for 2 and a half hours, and didn't play them all.

I also saw country singer George Strait do the same thing once for 2 hours, nothing but #1 hits, never played all of them.

Either that, or the whole of Love You before the break, and Gershwin completely after. The Oz drinking classes won't notice anything odd after 9 PM anyway.

Worst case scenario, if the crowd turns on BW he can always pull a Tila Tequila and take his shirt off.

Yup.  OR, since he's getting bigger, if it's easier for him he could just do "Little Deuce Coupe" again.  Everybody likes that song, even when they're drunk.

And there's his Emergency Move:

if things get out of hand, he can always connect his keyboard, and do a solid hour of Shortnin' Bread. That will rock 'em to sleep. What was good for Iggy will surely be good for dem down under.

He'll play the greatest hits, they'll add in "They Can't Take That Away from Me" and possibly "The Like in I Love You," collect the paycheck and move on out. Mark my words.

More interesting question: Will he do some Aussie theater dates and actually debut a Gershwin-heavier setlist? That would be cool.

From Brian's official site....obviously written a little while ago....

Wilson's booking agents are in the early stages of planning a tour for 2011 on which the artist will perform "Reimagines" in its entirety, similar to his recent "Smile" and "Pet Sounds" concerts. According to Souriall, the first live performance of the Gershwin material is tentatively slated for October or November at Los Angeles' Disney Hall. It's "very likely" that the performance will be filmed for a future PBS special.

As others have said, this really seems like a terrible venue choice, especially given the material.  BWRG is far better suited to smaller halls, so hopefully the US tour will get it right.  That being said, if he comes anywhere near my neck of the woods (upstate NY), I'll be there in a heartbeat.  Seeing BWPS at Carnegie Hall was an amazing experience - come to think of it, that would be a great venue for the Gershwin material as well.

I hear the true reason Gabriel bailed was because tickets weren't selling at all well.
