Let me joint the queue: so cold I go burr is the firstest with the mostest, or something. Brian's return to worm. Eugene never happened. Steaks all around. Playing for the hashes. There is DNA available from Denny and Carl. Genetic engineering does the rest.

"Country Air" is a great song and there is the nice live version from Big Sur 1970. But I feel the Beach Boys always  benefited from an augmented line up in concert. Listen to anything live from 1968 on and compare it to say the late '67 shows on A Vocal Harmony. I will say that Dennis became a kick-ass drummer by 1980 or so.

I'm not too familiar with their live performances but I've always liked "Lei'd In Hawaii" for the Smiley-like take on some of their songs. Always thought Brian was onto something very cool there that was left virtually unexplored thereafter.

Weren't Brian and Dennis (maybe Carl?) on acid at that show, too?

I forget where I read this -- I want to say on here, but I dunno -- but I think Brian convinced all the Boys to take acid before doing the show, hence its shoddy performance (that, and the fact whoever was on bass [Al and Bruce?] were not bass players at all and only played bass because Brian was playing the organ.
Alan is the bass player on tons of BB songs, especially on the early albums where BW is banging away on the piano, so I'd say he's a pretty good bass-man. But those shows are really bad, even though I love the spaced-out feel of those shows, they couldn't sound less capable or 'professional'. PS, no Bruce at the Hawaii shows...

I always say that most of Love You (sans good time and Love is a Woman) plus 5 or so songs from Adult Child make the best BB album since Pet Sounds.

I'm among those who think Love You is among the best of Brian's output.  It isn't the prettiest, slickest, best arranged , produced, or sung of the catalogue.

But it is the picture of the complete person who has been  Brian Wilson....quirky, genius, melodic, inventive, eccentric.
It is , to me, an addictive piece of work.  No pun intended.  At times, I even prefer listening to the Love You demos and rough cuts that are out there.   Those recordings, more than anything, show the unrealized promise of the album and the material from that era.

But I am not a supporter of drug abuse by anyone, let alone a man who has had quite enought of that in his past.

I WOULD like to see Brian at the keyboard of an old synth performing one of these.  But he doesn't do much keyboard anymore and his voice has improved too much to do justice to the Love You songs  Razz

Well put that man. 'Love You' is the only BBs album I really love to play loud. It's a statement with substance (no pun intended). Sort of: triumphant, in an 'HAARRRGGHHH!!!' kind of way. At its arrival, there was a lot of bewilderment, because it was so unpredictable at the time.

I think it's one of the great punk albums of all time. Compared to it, 'Never Mind The Bollocks' is lame and lazy heavy metal by a bunch of bozos.

Brian has been trying for years to get out a killer, Moog Bass lined ,version of "Proud Mary" but dark forces keep standing in his way.

If he builds it (the Moog bass lined version of "Proud Mary"), it will come!

Would 'Pleasure Island' be his next "Love You"?

Brian re-recorded "Proud Mary" a few years ago. The new version is much better.

Was this re-recording intended for Pleasure Island? If so, did he record any others that we won't have heard?

Thanks

What's all this "Pleasure Island" stuff I keep seeing? An album Brian has spoken about possibly making? Maybe it's just an album full of Kokomo covers.

it was the planned album after TLOS and was to be the fabled rock n roll album with a loose concept based on pleasure island? Something like that anyway. I think proud Mary was to feature somewhere.

Damn that sounds cool.

I'd question the title Pleasure Island if it were by anyone else but... come on, it's Brian, it's gotta be awesome!

He suggested it in a couple of interviews, but I don't think anything definitive was ever announced.

There was a piece of paper on his piano in a TLOS promo pic, though, and it had what looked like a sketch for an outline of "Pleasure Island." It featured "Proud Mary," "At the Hop," and a "Pleasure Island theme," if I recall correctly.

the myth is crystalizing as we type! If I was brian's management I'd get him and the band to write and record this album on the sly (with lots of synths, of course)  alongside other projects, or even just stockpile a load of bonus cuts, then let it slip that brian finished pleasure island but felt the public wasn't ready for this inappropriate music. Wait 5 years for the fanboards to go into meltdown, with occasional rumour and leaked track then finally release it and watch the cash roll in.

True... and some of it's pretty good, but I have the impression that the Pleasure Island notion has been put on the back burner.

"It's called Pleasure Island: A Rock Fantasy. It's about some guys who took a hike, and they found a place called Pleasure Island. And they met all kinds of chicks, and they went on rides and — it's just a concept. I haven't developed it yet. I think people are going to love it — it could be the best thing I've ever done." - Brian Wilson, Rolling Stone, 2008.

I think Wirestone was joking but inadvertently got AGD to admit to something he otherwise might've been more guarded about!
