Actually "Two Lane Blacktop" is right up there in my top ten favorite films of all time just below the Katt/Dey flick "First Love" - Both are two highly underrated films from the 70s.

Actually Bruce Springsteen wrote a song that is somewhat based on "Two Lane Blacktop" although he claims that he didn't watch the film until after he wrote the song.  If you have the "Darkness" album handy, put on "Racing In The Street" there are several parallels which become evident when you compare the two.

First Love is great. Good call.
Springsteen has written several songs inspired by films, such as Thunder Road and Badlands, as well as Blacktop.
In a recent radio interview, he compared the onstage performing experience to the "vanishing point" found by Barry Sullivan in the classic road film of the same name from 1971.

Yes it is. Anchor Bay released it 5 years ago.

It was released on DVD but apparently went out of print quickly and already commands big bucks.  Last time I looked on Amazon it was going for at least $75.   I've been wracking my brain trying to remember the store where I saw it in the last couple of years.

Anyway, it's an exceptional movie.  Warren Oates and Laurie Bird have the best performances.  Oates steals the show.  I wish he was still around.

And Dennis Wilson. And Laurie Bird. Look at that cast. It's kind of eerie:

Warren Oates  -   dead at age 54
Dennis Wilson  -   dead at age 39
Laurie Bird       -   dead at age 35
James Taylor   -    ALMOST left us

I know, I started to mention that.  And of course, I wish the others were still around.  I saw where Laurie was in "Annie Hall," but don't remember her in it. Was she in the scene of the party in LA?  I think she was a photographer, too.

It's funny, I bought "Two Lane Blacktop" right after reading one of the DW bios about 4 years ago (maybe a bit more) and when I got it from Suncoast (in sotck) I was offered the choice of DVD or VHS. I opted for the VHS because I didn't have a DVD player. Damn, I kick myself-- I don't even think the movie is that good.

I bought the Special Edition DVD even before I ever saw that movie (and I don't regret it !!) on amazon and it wasn't that expensive.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

It's been awhile since I've seen it and I like it. I think it works on one of those days when you're sick in bed, or it's a cold rainy day and you're tired or reading and just sort of want to melt into something for awhile. Not sure if it's a good invite friends over, pop a bunch of popcorn and screen it with high expectations type movie. It kinda has to sneak up on you I think.
