Steven Gaines' book Heroes and Villains is probably the best one to start with since it's probably the best bio currently available. Peter Ames Carlin has a book coming out in May that's supposedly really good, maybe that one should be a buy. Look! Listen! Vibrate! Smile! is a given. Keith Badman's book is also essential, despite it only covering up to 1976.

Brian's "biography" Wouldn't It Be Nice: My Own Story  and Heroes and Villains by Steven Gaines. Why the biography? Even if it's maybe stolen or not true, it gives you kind of an idea of some of the issues. Heroes and Villains is good but you have to watch it for being trashy. Some pretty shocking stuff in there as well. Also read this around when I became a fan.

If I were you, I'd honestly wait and get Catch A Wave the day it comes out, along with Badman if you can afford it.  Peter's book looks to be the most balanced biography of Brian yet.  then I'd go to gaines H&V to get the dirt.

If you get really ambtious, David Leaf's California Myth book seems to be a good starting point, but it's out of print and I haven't even got around to picking it up.  I hear there are some good pictures in there.

I thought Heroes and Villians was filled with innacuracies?

Lets just start out with the best overall book Smiley

Timothy White's book was my favorite by far.  The Badman book is the most essential, but shouldn't be the first thing you read.

Heroes and Villains has the personal sh*t almost down, but his opinions of some of the best albums are weird to say the least.

I loved Timothy White's book too. The problem is that if you only want to know about the band, it is going to boring. It talks a lot about the family history really going back and just the California scene itself for a long time.

Do you want bio or info?  If you want info, the best you can do is two purchases:

1. Back to the Beach, a BB reader

2. The Complete Guide to the Music of the Beach Boys by Doe.

Taken together, this will give you all of the hard core info you need to start as a BB fan.  The former is a series of writings and essays from over a 40 year or so period, with most of the essential articles excerpted.  And no salacious gossip, wanderings into Wilson family history, or biased viewpoints with no balance.
