@c-man: Here you have both songs in a medley. Cash is doing "Detroit City" and Eddie Albert "Sloop john b." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOJ68D7qI_E&search=johnny%20cash

You see/hear the chorus is almost the same, so I believe Dennis really did sing Detroit City, also because talk was about Detroit when he did that...Hope I could help and you don't mind me telling you that

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Hmmm...having a hard time trying to download this.  How weird you should find both songs in one medley!  Thanks for sharing this, and I'll keep trying to hear it.  I'll update the notes in my archive, so thanks for the tip!

Oh, and can you tell me who had the hit with "Detroit City"?
I assume it wasn't Albert or Cash...

It was covered by so many (including Jan&Dean), but I believe the original is by Bobby Bare
