If Memphis had a Brian Wilson, he was probably this guy.  Lead singer of the Box Tops and musical mad genius behind the very influential underground Memphis band Big Star, Alex Chilton is dead at the age of 59.

Just a couple months back, Mojo had an article on Big Star, and I've been thinking about checking out some of their tunes. A very influential band, indeed.

Yeah, he was one of the greats.

He covered "I Wanna Pick You Up," too. Smiley

RIP Alex.

Very sad about this, Alex and Big Star were one of the bands that got me into making my own music. Brilliant albums and utterly fresh and very modern sounding, ahead of their time for sure.

Terri Gross reran her 90's interview with
Alex a few nights ago on NPR.  You can go to NPR/Fresh Air to listen to the rebroadcast right here inside your computer!

A neat character and fine musical force in his time,

Great artist. There's a nice Big Star Box Set out there. Covers everything (I think all official studio recordings are included).

They had already kind of rewritten this song's intro (and they first four words) for their own "Turn my back on the sun".

Chilton was great

Memphis didn't need no Brian Wilson. There's so much great music and already enough talent coming out of that city, unbelievable (nothing against Brian of course).
I was just listening to The Box Tops' "Non stop"-album. Such a wonderful record ! Can't believe I ignored them for so long....

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.
