Hi all,

below is the track listing to my most recent project: A two disc compilation covering the essentials of the 1966/67 Smile sessions. What do you think? What would have done differently, dropped, included, changed?

My intentions were
1. Decide once and for all which bootlegs have the best sounding version of what.
2. To present the sessions from a historical viewpoint.
3. Not to create "Andreas' Smile Edit".
4. Not to create "Smile 2004 from old sessions".
5. No remixing, cross-fading.
6. Keep editing at minimum, only to avoid studio chatter and such.
7. Follow the song order on the handwritten list for the "proper album", because that's the only historical document to rely on, as doubtful as it is.

Disc 1

(An attempt at the proper album)
1. Prayer (GV box set)
2. Do You Like Worms (GV box set)
3. Wind Chimes (SOT 16)
4. Heroes And Villains (Feb. 67 mix, GV box set)
5. Surf's Up (piano solo, GV box set)
6. Good Vibrations (DCC Endless Summer)
7. Cabin Essence (Pastmasters 20/20)
8. Wonderful (GV box set)
9. I'm In Great Shape (third version, Psychedelic Sounds)
10. Child Is Father Of The Man (Vigotone, disc 1, track 5)
11. The Elements Part 1 Fire (mono mix with crackling fire sounds, Archaeology)
12. Water Chant (SOT 16, edited out from Love To Say Da Da)
13. Love To Say Da Da (GV box set)
14. I Wanna Be Around Friday / Friday Night (SOT 16)
15. Vega-Tables (personal mono edit, from SOT 17 mono mix attempts and a short part from the Smiley version)
(The remarkable thing about this version is that it only uses secion that were
already mixed to mono by Brian. No corss-fades were done, only hard edits.)
16. The Old Master Painter / You Were My Sunshine (Gema Smile)

(Outtakes)
17. You're Welcome (Smiley Smile / Wild Honey twofer)
18. Barnyard (SOT 16, one channel used to avoid fake stereo)
19. Look (SOT 17, "take 20")
20. Holidays (Archaeology)
21. He Gives Speeches (SOT 16)
22. Been Way Too Long (Gema Smile)
23. With Me Tonight (Archaeology, edited out from an assembly of two versions)
24. Tones (Secret Smile)
25. Unknown Instrumental (Secret Smile)

(Some instrumental tracks)
26. Wind Chimes (early track, SOT 17)
27. Surf's Up (track, GV box set)
28. Good Vibrations (track, GV box set)
29. Cabin Essence (track, GV box set)
30. Wonderful (track with additional backing vocals, Vigotone)
31. Child Is Father Of The Man (track, finished mono mix, Archaeology)
32. Heroes And Villains Intro (Archaeology)
33. The Elements Part 1 Fire (long take without overdubs, Archaeology)
34. The Old Master Painter / You Were My Sunshine (track, SOT 16)

Disc 2

1. Do You Like Worms. Source: SOT 16. (unedited)
2. Bicycle Rider, Source: Archaeology.
3. Heroes And Villains Demo. Source: Archaeology. I had to edit two tracks together. This is longer than the Endless Harmony version.
4. Heroes And Villains - stereo mix.
First two verses, cantina section and the whole second part of the single version starting with "My Children Were Raised". Source: Archaeology. Several sections edited together by me.
5. Heroes  And Villains - various "part 2" sections in stereo. Source: Archaeology. Several sections edited together by me.
6. Heroes And Villains - vocal overdub number 5. Source: SOT 17. This has the vocals in stereo, but the backing track is very low.
7. Heroes And Villains Fade - stereo mix. Source: SOT 17.
8. Heroes And Villains - mono mix attempt. Source: SOT 17.
I edited this particular track to avoid non-musical sounds. The edit appears at 0:43. This mix attempt is remarkable because Brian and Mike are trading the lead vocals.
9. How I Love My Girl - finished (?) mix. Source: SOT 17.
This was apparently mixed and edited by Brian. Note that there is a glitch near the end of the track. This glitch is on the original SOT 17 disc.
10. Bag Of Tricks. Source: MP3.
11. Surf's Up - Inside Pop version (without voice-over). Source: Vigotone.
12. Surf's Up Rehearsal. Source: Vigotone
13. Wonderful - Rock With Me Henry. Source: SOT 16.
14. Wonderful - vocal insert. Source: SOT 17.
15. I'm In Great Shape, version 1. Source: Psychedelic Sounds (MP3).
16. I'm In Great Shape, version 2. Source: Psychedelic Sounds (MP3).
17. Child Is Father Of The Man. Source: Archaeology.
I edited two tracks together, imitating the alternate version on Vigotone. The vocals are different than on the other version. The edit done by me occurs at 0:40. The edit at 1:05 is original.
18. Child Is Father Of The Man. Source: SOT 16. Probably edited that way by the SOT bootleggers.
19. All Day. Source: Psychedelic Sounds (MP3). I extracted the the most complete take, no editing was done.
20. Love To Say Da Da, stereo mix. Source: Secret Smile (MP3).
I did not use the "stereo mix" on Secret Smile because it sounded crappy.  Instead, I edited two tracks together. The 2nd part ("vocal overdub", starting at 0:24) is unedited. Note the part at the end sounds like a section from Child Is Father Of The Man.
21. Love To Say Da Da, second day, take 2. Source: Secret Smile (MP3).
22. Vega-Tables demo. Source: Archaeology. This is not really a demo, note the full band vocals.
23. Vega-Tables scat-verse and a sloppy Sleep A Lot version. Source: SOT 17. (unedited)
24. Sleep A Lot, early version. Source: Archaeology. Since this is absent on SOT 17, it was possibly recorded earlier than April 1967.
25. Sleep A Lot, fast version. Source: SOT 17.
This is the version that I used for the middle eight on my own edit. This is apparently a finished mono mix.
26. Sleep A Lot, slow version. Source: SOT 17.
27. Look, alternate version. Source: SOt 16.
28. He Gives Speeches (mono mix). Source: Vigotone. Compared to SOT 16, this is sped up by a semitone.
29. With Me Tonight (alt. version number 2). Source: Secret Smile (MP3).
There is a slightly better source on Archaeology, but that cuts off abruptly at about 0:50.
30. My Little Red Book. Source: Secret Smile (MP3).
Recorded February 14, 1967, but not intended for Smile. Reportedly, this is Carol Kaye playing bass.

Various Good Vibrations outtakes. Those are all extracted from longer sessions, but otherwise unedited.
31. First instrumental track. Source: SOT 15, disc 1, track 8.
Apparently a version that was considered finished at its time.
32. Second instrumental track. Source: Official Pet Sounds Sessions box set.
I used the offical version from the PS box set; it sounded better than the noise reduction on SOT 15.
33. Oboe. Source: Archaeology, disc 2, track 8.
34. Organ and fuzz bass. Source: Archaeology, disc 2, track 9.
35. Jew's harp and bass harmonica. Source: Archaeology, disc 2, track 10.
The same section is also on SOT 15 with wider stereo separation, but the noise reduction was unbearable.
36. Fuzz bass and clarinet. Source: Archaeology, disc 2, track 4.
37. New track with unused backing vocals. Source: Archaeology, disc 2, track 6.
38. Another unused section. Source: SOT 15, disc 2, track 22.
39. Another unused section. Source: SOT 15, disc 2, track 15, from 1:17 to 1:55.
40. Another unused section. Source: SOT 15, disc 3, track 23.
41. Verse vocals overdub from the Pet Sounds sessions, apparently over a finished edit of the backing track.
Source: SOT 15, disc 3, track 29.
I found that very interesting, because it shows how the basic structure of the song had been decided at a very early stage. Compared to the final single version, only two parts of the backing track were changed: The cello/theremin part for the chorus, and the new track at around 2:15.
42. Chorus vocals overdub from the Pet Sounds sessions. Source: SOT, disc 3, track 32.
This seems to be from an earlier version than the preceding track.

43. Smile radio promo spot. Source: Gema Smile.

That's a very cool tracklisting. Those appear to be the best possible sources. I'd play that for a newbie.

Andreas - I wanted to thank you for posting this tracklist. For some time I've been thinking of doing a similar project, compiling a decent overview of Smile that I could play for someone who has not heard the Smile sessions of 66-67 without being overwhelmed by multiple "Hitsville!"-style takes, and you've done a great job.

Uh, forgive my ignorance.  Re: disc 1 track 9.

I thought that demo on the EH soundtrack was the only thing that was identifiable as IIGS previous to BWPS.

I mean, so many got it so wrong thinking IWBA/Woodshop/Friday Night was somehow part and parcel of IIGS.

So what is this piece then?

So what is this piece then?

There are three instrumental versions from the Smile era. Musically, this is the same section as heard on Smile 2004 or the Endless Harmony soundtrack. These are not demos, these are actual instrumental sessions.

The instrumentation is different in each case, but they all feature some kind of "tape explosion" effect. I have these on an MP3 sourced bootleg with the name "Psychedelic Sounds".

This type of compilation reads like an upcoming Vigotone release! I miss those
folks! Be nice if this compilation would be put together with artwork and tree'd as this is the type of project that is constantly done on the Beatles Bootlegzone Forum and Yahoo Beatleg email lists; putting together material in one place that hasn't been done before--
with logic and intelligence as this compilation is!

C'mon folks lets get this one out there Smiley

Great work.  Some ambitious fella ought to compile all known sessions in chrono order [as much as possible] or even just "best" takes in chrono order.
