Does anyone know if theres more information on this interview with Derek Taylor? On April 29, Taylor announced in Disc & Music Echo that "All the 12 songs for the new Beach Boys album (Smile) are completed and ... there are plans to release the album on a rush-schedule any moment." I wonder if Taylor was lying or just buying time or something or was Smile really "complete" at this point? So many questions!!

Probably he was buying time, as it wasn’t complete. Only several days later, Taylor announced the abandonment of Smile to the press.

Yes it appears that Derek is flubbing... but at the same time, depending how privy he was to the Boys sessions ... he could have very well believed it was nearing the end. He could be lying to buy some time... but I see it as equally possible that either he heard enough, session wise; or he had been told by Brian himself that he was close.

You have to remember that saying it was close to completion would help Derek, too.
Going on, regardless of Derek’s input.

It appears Carl and Al overdubbed the acoustic guitars on BLUEBIRDS, possibly while in New York City. During the NYC sessions, Van McCoy (later of disco masterpiece THE HUSTLE fame) was hired to add the strings and horns.

Really? That’s another track for the Al list, I didn’t have any clue! I kinda figured that Carl was one of the guitarists, seeing as he & Bruce were producers.

That info comes from Bruce, on two different occasions.

Off the top of my head...

Heroes & Villains
Wonderful
Surf’s Up
Vega-Tables
Wind Chimes
Good Vibrations

Other than that I’d actually be curious to know if there was more.

That depends on your definition of the word "know"....

It's most likely Brian and Brian, although no way to be absolutely certain, as the tracking session and first generation tape don't survive.

Actually aside from the guitars (Carl and Al) and the drums (John Guerin & Dennis, with the former also on tambourine and woodblock), I have no idea who could’ve played the other instruments. The bass sounds a bit easy (there’s a tab on Ultimate Guitar’s website) and the organ is simplistic too.

The piano and organ both play during Brian's count-in, so they're likely overdubs (tracksheet lends to that too), and the dynamic of the track suggests the bass, drums, and at least one rhythm guitar were live. The bass is in Brian's style, quite messy. Difficult to say it both Carl and Al played guitar or if Carl handled both.

Carl played the tambourine, shaken a the same time as Guerin's drum performance.

I’ve always wondered about All I Want To Do. The only thing I’ve seen about the song is that the drums are Mike Kowalski (and even that was Wikipedia). Then there was the fuzz bass, the lead guitar, the piano and the horns. No idea. Is there any information? Judging by the lack of results I assume not. It sounds like mostly session musicians and not the boys, it’s a really tight arrangement.

Remember that less documentation usually means no session musicians.

That’s a good point. That fuzz bass rocks though. Maybe Mike, Daryl & Ed were utilized.

Who plays the bass on Aren’t You Glad? From my understanding it was Carl because of how the bass sounded, but for whatever reason on Wikipedia it was switched to Brian, which just doesn’t sound right. Was it Carl? As soon as I saw that happen on Wikipedia I began questioning anyone and everyone that could have possibly made that change.

My guess would be it's Brian. I think there was a feeling until a few years ago that Brian didn't do much in those sessions, but around the time of Sunshine Tomorrow that seemed to change a bit, with recognition of Brian's more extensive involvement. I don't remember any specific piece of info coming out to change that particular reference though. C-man might jump in at this point. . .

Probably not Brian on bass because piano and bass were put down simultaneously.

Thus putting Carl on bass (unless if there’s a guitar on the basic)?

Well, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNfG5hLgjg8 is what we have and the only voices I hear are Brian and Carl's.  So draw what conclusions you will.
