Did The BBs ever interact with/meet with Boy George?

I'd tend to assume that through the 1985 album/Steve Levine connection, there'd have at least been some sort of meeting (particularly since they used his song Passing Friend), but I haven't heard of them ever actually meeting in person.

Boy George co-wrote Passing Friend

Right, which is why I'm curious if they ever met in person, or if Levine simply took a demo to The Boys to have them record, without there having been any Boy/Boys in-person meeting.

I wouldn't be surprised if they never met Boy George, at least in connection with those sessions. It seems like Levine devised some of the guest spots separate from the "proper" Beach Boys session. I recall an interview where Al was reminded that Ringo played on "California Calling", and he seemed to indicate that Levine had done all of that on his own, and probably because he was based in the UK.

While it makes sense that they could have run into folks like Ringo, Gary Moore, or Stevie Wonder (I don't know though if they actually *did*) since those people actually *played* on the album, I believe Boy George only wrote "Passing Friend" but didn't play or sing on it. Though, it's worth noting that his co-writer Roy Hay was credited with nearly *all* of the instrumentation on "Passing Friend." So it's somewhat more likely one or more of the band may have met Hay.

It's funny; I played the '85 album for someone a few years ago and told them the one song was essentially a Culture Club outtake, and they insisted it sounded like *another* Culture Club song. They then played me a Culture Club song (I *think* it's the song called "Miss Me Blind", from 1983), and it *is* pretty darn similar to "Passing Friend."

What is the origin of Brian's cover of his brother Carl's song, "Heaven"?  When was it recorded and for what project? I seem to recall it might've been a website exclusive or something? I haven't been able to find it on the interwebs, although I know I've heard it many moons ago.

It was a free download from Brian's then-website, recorded, mixed and posted on December 21, 2007, on what Brian says would have been Carl's birthday.  Not issued anywhere else AFAIK.

A poster across the road is looking for the source of a Van Dyke (or, less likely, Brian) quote about Smile being a response to the British Invasion. I found this fascinating essay...

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=7418.0;wap2

...which includes the following:

"The section of the album which is most heavily rooted in themes of Americana is the Heroes and Villains section. This was described by lyricist Van Dyke Parks as a response to the British invasion. They were trying to be counter hip according to Parks and decided to embrace and celebrate American themes."

No source, unfortunately. Does anyone here know when or where VDP said this?

Brian's "Heaven" recording later made it onto one of those freebie Endless Summer Quarterly CDs as well.

Confusingly, ESQ did a Carl-themed tribute issue/CD which featured Brian's "Believe In Yourself", while it was on a Dennis-themed tribute issue/CD where they featured Brian's cover of "Heaven."

So, I know "Good Time" was recorded during the Sunflower sessions, but before it was released in '77 was it touched at all? Like did Brian or the guys overdub anything or make any changes before releasing it on Love You?

According to AGD's Little Blue Book, the "solid group vocals ... were much more prominent on the original mix".

Is that little abrupt "hey" spoken at the end on both versions? Either way, it's impossible to know what was on the mulitracks as of 1970 based on the extant mixes.

It sounds like it was mainly just remixing the track that was involved.

There's also the Spring/American Spring version of the song from 1972/73 that uses the same backing track.

According to said AGD in said book, "Brian's 'hey' isn't a new addition, having been on the multi-track all along."

Hello... I recently made an account here just because I had a few insignificant questions that I couldn't find the answers to. (Or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.) Have been lurking for a few months.

I won't ask everything at once, but here are a couple to begin with...

1. Where was this video for "Long Promised Road" filmed? I feel like I should recognize the city, but I don't.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVoDULF4sAM

2. on the subject of "Long Promised Road" (as it's one of my favorite Beach Boys songs), in the second verse, what's the second-to-last line? I keep seeing it written as "So real, the pain growing in my soul," but I can't make my ears hear that for some reason. Is it just the way it's sung? I hear it more like "So real, the pain of growing in soul" or something.

3. Is there more footage available of the event at the White House shown at 9:31 in this video?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSeS622wdQ8

That's all for now... thanks in advance!

Pretty sure it's Prague 1968

Ah thank you, and sorry for such a late reply!

I've been listening a lot to Country Air lately and i've been wondering, all the "hmmhmm" humming in the verses, is it intentionally done like that or is there a story where like Mike couldn't come up with full lyrics and they left it blank?? i know this sounds silly, but i thought it could be a possibility

A few years ago, I came across a Beach Boys clip where Al Jardine was singing. I believe he had a cold at the time because he has a really reliable voice. His voice cracked very badly during the song. I want to say it was Heroes & Villains or Wouldn't It Be Nice? Does anyone know which clip I am referring to?

There are a few live recordings floating around from over the years where the various members are kind of rough due to colds, etc.

I think there's a "Farm Aid" performance where Al clearly has some sort of cold or other throat issue. Probably the 1986 show, where they did "Rock and Roll to the Rescue" and "Lady Liberty", etc.

A few months ago I asked this at PSF to no avail. Maybe someone here can help me. There used to be a video of the Boys performing KTSA, GV and Goin' On on a TV show called "Friday's" or something like that, but it has sadly disappeared from Youtube. Does anybody know if this video can be found elsewhere? I liked it an awful lot.
