Wouldn't it be cool if Mike had a son called Jesus Love?

In 65-83, did anyone else of the band but Mike sing ever California Girls live?  Would be cool to hear a Dennis version, if he ever sang it.

A short clip of Al (with Jeff) singing California Girls, June 16, 1983, Erie, PA (http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/gigs83.html)

http://youtu.be/dbQZkKzV4O0?t=6m15s

it's a whole different vibe without Mike on stage isn't it? i like it.

I'm actually surprised he doesn't already have one called Eros Love.

2. Some interviews have been mentioned already. There's one I recall (early 2000s) in which Brian talks openly and very lucid about Landy. He said that Landy did good for him but then became "power mad" (that's his term). There is another interview, I think, in which his lady assistant asks the interview not to ask more questions about the subject. Perhaps it's all the same interview and I'm confused. In any case, it's probably available somewhere in the www.

Here

That would be his lady assistant wife, Melinda.  Grin

Can't help you much with release dates (except years where noted). My thinking is that they were probably released concurrently with their vinyl counterparts. Anyway, here is a yet to be completed list of Beach Boys reel to reels:

The Beach Boys' Christmas Album – Y1T 2164
Beach Boys Concert / All Summer Long – Y2T 2370
Shut Down Vol. 2 / Little Deuce Coupe – Y2T 2383
Pet Sounds – ZT 2458 (7 ½ IPS) (Duophonic)
Best of The Beach Boys Vol. 1 – Y1T 2545
Smiley Smile – Brother Y1T 9001 (1967)
Wild Honey – Y1T 2859
Friends – Y1T 2895
Best of The Beach Boys Vol. 3 – Y1T 2945
20-20 – Y1T 133

Sunflower – RST 6382 B
Surf's Up – RST 6453 B (1971)
Pet Sounds / Carl and The Passions – So Tough – RST 2083 F-DP
Holland – RST 2118-C (1973) (7 ½ IPS)
The Beach Boys In Concert – RST 6484-P-DP (1973) (7 ½ IPS)
Good Vibrations Best of The Beach Boys - ? (7 ½ IPS)

Little Deuce Coupe – TA-T 1998 (UK) (1963)
Beach Boys Concert – TA-T 2198 (UK)
Pet Sounds – TA-T 2458 (UK) (1966)
Smiley Smile (UK)
Best of The Beach Boys – TA-T 20856 (UK)
Wild Honey – TA-T 2859 (UK) (1967)

Close-Up – YWW-253

Best of The Beach Boys Vol. II – 1R1 6398

heya Metal,

my thinking is that too, but while I'm unsure, I have to also think that maybe the releases were later........

I know my 'Christmas' album on reel seems original, but it's hard to think this is one produced and manufactured in 1964!!

it sure as well maybe...... it has the original reel, and the tape seems legit of the time, hence the dropouts in the first song and the last song

on the reel........and the tape top is in great condition...... but the history of it, I am not sure.....

I am a bit foreign in this area of BB reel to reel collecting....... thanks for the reply.

So here's a question that's been bugging me for a long time. On the mono mix of Let the Wind Blow, there's an instrument playing the downbeats of the middle 8 (the "Let the bees make honey" part). It's absent on the stereo remixes. It's got a feel very similar to the drums on Do It Again or the cowbell on Slip On Through, which makes me think it probably uses a similar multi-tap delay effect. It sounds almost like a 1990s-era digital alarm clock, except it's clearly playing chords. I can't for the life of me figure out what instrument this is. Any ideas?

Rick, I'm inclined to think that it would have been released around the same time as the Christmas album since it shares the same catalogue number and Capitol "dome" logo as its LP counterpart.

hey cool metal!!!

this area needs a lot more documentation...........as some came out as 3 3/4 and some at 7 ips...

perhaps someone already has, if they have, someone please point me in that direction....

some tapes are great to listen to, particularly the 7 1/2 ips tapes......

I have a Pet Sounds one, but unfortunately is has a few 'cringeworthy' splices in it................. (damn!!)

but it sounds great in it's so called 'biasonic process' sound.....whatever that means..

Oh Well..

Many thanks for the link to that – I had a copy at the time (might still have it) but haven't read it for years. 12 years, probably… but it's one of the most candid interviews with Brian I ever read. The answers are characteristically short but quite shockingly blunt in places.

I mean, get a load of this:

Quote
"I’m celibate and live for the moment of joy when I make music, when I listen to music, when I listen to Phil Spector’s records, but the joy of sex has diminished from my life. I’ll get it back but I’m just in a slow period. I want to get it back because I love it."

I’m somewhat at a loss for words because the sex thing had come out of nowhere and you really don’t think of him as a sexual being. He continues: "It goes away for about a month and then I get it back. I have sex once a month." Doesn’t your wife go crazy? "No. She’s in the same bag as I am. She’s that way."

Some moments later, the immaculately denimed blonde wife returns and hugs him hotly. I thought, you wouldn’t be hugging him like that if you knew what he just told me about not having sex.

Anyone have a link top the letter Melinda sent to the Glasgow Herald after an unnecessarily  scathingly personal review of what I think was the same 2002 gig?

Brian strangely said a similar thing in the 1976 Rolling Stone article by David Felton where he said he was abstaining from sex.  Later, Marilyn clarified that they do still have sex, he just never ejaculates.  It's like, thanks, we all definitely wanted to know that.  LOL

Anybody have more info on this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG9luwmrOAk

It's Brian Wilson live in 1986, and he seems to be all there, and his speech isn't slurred at all, really with it. He forgets the lyrics at one point to Surfer Girl, and gives a shoutout to Landy.

I've never seen it before, and it's really wild to watch.

Not Brian's first solo gig - as claimed in the video - by over a year. NAS tribute show, Beverley Theater, Beverley Hills, LA. Bruce was also on the bill. Cool footage, and excellent audio. This was before Landy's gross over-medication kicked in: there's footage from his autobiography promo tour, fall 1991, that would make you weep (in fact, it formed part of the smoking gun evidence that eventually freed him from Landy's control). You also have to factor in that this was shot some 28 years ago.
