Why didn't they get Mark Linett to mix the concert album?  I'm listening to http://www.npr.org/2005/08/23/4182988/brian-wilsons-smile-live-in-concert and what a fantastic sounding concert recording.  Definitely makes me wish Linett had done it rather than Joe Thomas.

Agreed, I guess maybe JT is easier to get a hold of? Or he works cheaper?

JT probably had the live album included as part of his deal in co-producing the whole C50 kaboodle.

In insignificant, but adorable, Beach Boys related news:

I was getting caught up on my magazine reading during the holiday yesterday, and an issue of Vogue from a few months back had a piece on Dahni Harrison's wedding. He and his bride had their first dance to "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)".

Anyone remember that demo version of "What Love Can Do" sung by a reference singer? It was played on some radio broadcast. Used to have a copy, but I can't find it at the moment. Would anyone happen to have a copy they'd be willing to PM?

What's up with the fade on "Transcendental Meditation"? It jumps from loud to soft to silence in a matter of seconds. Was this always intended or was it a mistake made during mixing?
It's really weird. I notice it on the original 1968 pressings the most. Anyone???

Is there a version of "Sumahama" that clocks in at 4:07? According to Wikipedia the album version is shorter than the single.

Is the Beach Boys "Concert" album the first live album? I can't find a definitive answer online, with most people saying the Stones made the first live album in 1966.

What, you mean 1st live album by anyone ever? Not even close.

Do you mean 1st live album from a pop/rock/r&b act? The greatest live album -- and one of the best albums ever, period -- is James Brown Live at the Apollo, from 1963. Off the top of my head, I believe the Searchers also put out a live album in 1964 before the Beach Boys did.

It's on a load of my early pressings of songs. Let him Run Wild is another and You're So Good To Me [i think]. I literally believe the studios could not fade out and so did the false fades instead.

Wikipedia wrong - the album version is 4.07. The version on the B side of "It's A Beautiful Day" is listed at 4.28.

That would seem to agree with Wiki, then.

And there's a "waves" version as well. Only available on a Japanese sampler LP I think. Nothing special; as far as I can remember just the sound of waves edited in and after the track's fade out.

Question on "Fallin' In Love"... The Brian Wilson: Pet Projects version is the B-Side of "Shyin' Away" and was released in 1973. However, on the CD version of Spring (1988), "Fallin' In Love" is a bonus track but it is a different mix, it's slower, and has a different intro. When was that version recorded? And, any idea why the B-Side wasn't used as the bonus track on the Spring CD?

Is Dennis's relationship with Shawn Marie Love the sole reason (or at least the most significant one) for Dennis and Mike's mutual dislike for each other?

If I can recall correctly, the relationship between Mike and Dennis was usually pretty strained. However, when Dennis was introduced to Shawn as Mike's illegitimate daughter, he saw the ability to get some sort of ultimate revenge against Mike.

It worked. Mike wasn't thrilled about it.
