My understanding is that in the early 80s, First Love - which BTW isn't at all bad
Yes, FIRST LOVE is likely a minor masterpiece, but I'm still holding out for the eventual release of MIKE LOVE PRESENTS ATLANTIS RISING.

Check out the Gigs & Sessions section on 10452, which details, where possible, Brian's presence at all shows since 1961 (yes, he was skipping shows as early as 1963). His last show with the band before the 2012 Grammys was September 8th 1996 in Chicago. Prior to that, his presence was increasingly sporadic. Here's a rundown from 1980:
1980 77 61 1981 112 all 1982 142 69 1983 124 44 1984 106 2 1985 97 4 1986 108 2 1987 147 18 1988 144 11 1989 109 7 1990 107 9 1991 116 0 1992 81 0 1993 104 0 1994 69 0 1995 96 4 1996 70 3
Interesting. I assumed Brian was playing more shows with the band in the middle 80's, even though he was not present at any of the concerts I attended 1983-93. I saw him solo in the 2000's, but in fact last year was the FIRST time I ever saw Brian Wilson play with the band! Makes me realize again what a truly special year 2012 was for The Beach Boys. (As fans we always want more, but really let's be grateful for what we got...C50 2012 was a small miracle.) 1981...what a slog that must have been.

After 1990, Brian didn't play a single Beach Boys show until 1995. That's a good example of what I kind of meant by my question. Did Brian ever consider himself not a beach boy anymore? Was there ever a conscious decision to distance himself from the group? Or was it just his somewhat lazy "I'll do whatever the hell I want to do" attitude?

My guess is that in the years prior, making it big as a solo artist was his main concern. Landy certainly pushed him in that direction. Then it took a couple of years after Landy was gone to recover from the emotional and legal fallout of it all. I always view Stars & Stripes as more of a bridge building exercise between Brian and the others rather than an album forged out of any real creative desire.

His first creative impulse was to write songs for The Beach Boys, so I'd say he wanted to be one. I don't think playing live is the sole condition of being a member of the band!

When was the "Water Chant" first recorded? I've checked AGD's site and used the search function on here but I haven't found anything relevant.

To view my video documentation of my Beach Boys collection go to www.youtube.com/justinplank "Someone needs to tell Adrian Baker that imitation isn't innovation." -The Real Beach Boy ~post of the century~ "Well, you reached out to me too, David, and I'd be more than happy to fill Bgas's shoes. You don't need him anyway - some of us have the same items in our collections as he does and we're also much better writers. Spoiled brat....." -Mikie "in this online beach boy community, I've found that you're either correct or corrected. Which in my mind is all in good fun to show ones knowledge of their favorite band."- punkinhead

Andrew, don't know if you've posted it previously, but could you do the same breakdown of gigs vs. Brian's presence at them for 1961-79 the way you did for 1980-96? Checked at Bellagio and did not find a numerical summary for this info, would love to see it if you are amenable.

Did Andrew Sandoval's Come To The Sunshine podcast ever do The Beach Boys?

A bloke named Jacob did a nice mix of Barnshine for his Smile with his own overdubbed vocals since it seems the finished version only survives on acetate and the 'you are my shunshine' part is hardly audible. Jacob does a fine attempt at making the lyrics a little clearer on that one!

Very basic overview off the top of my head: played all the shows in 1961 & 1962... started missing shows in 1963 (Alan subbed, including an entire Hawaiian tour and most of a midwest tour - check the footnotes on 10452)... played almost all the shows in 1964 and about a weeks worth in 1965 (as noted on 10452, subbing for Glen) and the Hollywood Bowl show... 1966, none bar the encore of one Chicago show... 1967, the Hawaii shows... 1968-1969, none... 1970, the short NW tour subbign for Mike and three of the November Whiskey shows... 1971, one show, for one song... 1972-1975, none... 1976, selected dates from July 2nd onwards... 1977-78, most including a few Celebration shows... 1979, most, apparently.

If you can wait till June-the book I worked on with Jon Stebbins will go into a lot of detail about the topic of Brian and shows he played or didn't play. Check out this link to see info on the book: http://beachboysconcert.halleonardbooks.com/
