But I also read in an Interview or Article that - after MIU - and after they lost a lot of money because of "missmanagement" by Stephen Love (?), Alan Jardine was put in charge as both Manager and Head of Brother Records?Huh I read it in Kingley Abbotts Book, but I´m not sure anymore in which section or article. So I won´t find the exact quote quickly....

That was over before it started.

Of course since the WOTS-podcast, if not earlier, I have some doubts about what Bruce says when it comes to Mike. Anyway, I wasn't there....

Care to elaborate?

Well, nothing special. It's just that Bruce kinda seems to praise everything Mike's doing to the sky, no matter how unimportant it might be. For the "It's ok"-podcast he mentions how great Mike's voice is, because he can sing nasal and soft. You know that kind of things. Just pointless stuff like that. Check it out at 6:49 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6g_zC1gU5Y&feature=PlayList&p=35A937B098381DEF&index=10
Don't get me wrong. Mike has a great voice but it's got nothing to do with singing nasal or soft; everyone can do that.
And of course the famous "all around Mr. cool"-quote from EH. There's a lot of those things when Bruce talks about Mike and to me it doesn't sound very honest at all. But again, that's just me and it's no try at a Mike-bashing, just my feelings

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I think it`s obvious that Bruce has been left very pissed off about how Mike has been represented by Leaf and others and feels the need to defend him a lot. I`m not sure there`s any reason to doubt him in terms of honesty though. His `Mr. Cool` quote actually rings true to me as Mike does seem to have been that kind of cocky, popular young man and this blended perfectly with Brian`s character. Obviously though if that type of young person doesn`t change as they get older then they become uncool and that`s what happened with Mike.

Yeah. While I'm old Cheesy, I still don't recall a lot about The Beach Boys in the 1960's, but I did read somewhere - and it wasn't on a message board! - that Mike at one time was considered cool, and some casual fans thought he was Brian Wilson!

Mike has become a bit of a parody of himself, but, I somehow think he's comfortable with that. And I can't blame him for it. He is cooler than most 70 year-old grandpa's (great-grandpa yet?). While he's begininng to show his age, he still looks and sounds pretty much like Mike Love. And that's a good thing.

I don't mean that Bruce ain't honest, it just sounds like that and totally ridiculous if he praises such unimportant (and nonsense) things like that nasal-soft thing. Like I said, anyone can do that, it ain't nothing you could be praising. Mike has other talents, that definitely deserve to be praised. And this being so ridiculous makes it sound doubtful to me, because I think Bruce is bright enough to know about that. Like I said, my problem. Ought not turn into a Mike/Bruce-bashing

Haha, I like this Leif - you write some of your postings in a Country slang  Grin Cool Guy  LOL

I´d suggest that Bruce knows Mike and he owes him a great deal., isn´t it? I mean, Bruce doesn´t have a share of Brother Records anymore, so in all the Beach Boys Business things he can team up with Mike. And Mike needs Bruce to have him in the band. But in a way, Bruce is always trying to defend Mike...also his.. that Mike is said to be this and that.. and so on... Mike has ruined his reputation over the years himself but I think, many people are willing to "forgive". And i might say, Brian would be one of them...

You might be thinking of Fred Vail...but he wasn't their manager. He was mainly a concert promoter, and later worked as a record promoter.

Seconded. While a lot of fun may be had about Mike's bald pate, his turbans, his Maharishi dress code, and his predilection for chintz, he's stayed the same essentially over the years. Many folks his age really look a lot older, more weary of life. And one can't maintain that the Lovester looks young because he didn't work hard.

Now that I write this, I suddenly realize that his R 'n' R Hall Of Fame Introduction speech was a true representation of reality. We were all wrong.  Embarrassed

I'd say from that 'fact sheet' that Mike Love is the Beach Boys.

That kinda reminds me of the band bio that Capitol posted on the 'official' BB site back in November 2002 - then took down literally two days later after being deluged with emails from irate fans.  Grin

You gotta love it.

1961. The Beach Boys formed - including Mike Love!

1962. First Beach Boys single, co written by none other than MIKE LOVE!

1963. First #1 hit co written my that musical luminary MIKE LOVE!

etc, etc, etc.

You'd think he was the only member....that the band was a vehicle for the immeasurable talents of MIKE LOVE!

The guy does have talent, and really doesn't need that kind of trumpeting.

Wait a minute. So Dolly wears a wig? That's not her real hair? Next thing you'll be telling me her boobs are fake too.
