You know, the Honeys tracks have wound up on numerous other CD comps, not just their own. And everytime now, it is those freaking Ron Furmanek stereo remixes and not the original mono. I just got a comp from the EU and it was from 2004. And it sez the original master tapes. But it isnt. It's those damn stereo mixes. I have been able to find the mono mixes of some tracks spread on one off's here and there. But still missing alot.

Just Wondering.......

Strictly speaking, they are the original master tapes... just not the original mono mixes. Which I agree, are much superior.

I never understood why anyone would be interested in the Honeys.  Their records are not something I'd want to listen to more than once.

Thought I'd ask a quick Spring question, kinda related, because it pisses me off....

I bought the Brian Wilson Pet Projects CD, thinking it would have a nice clean "Fallin' In Love" on it. But it's a different version/mix than the Spring CD. It's very hissy, almost like a needledrop; it's also faster than the Spring CD version. Does anybody know if this is the "single" version, and is it taken from the original master?

Glad to know I wasn't the only one that realized it was a faster version! I think it was probably a mixing error maybe?

Exactly. No-one would buy a Honeys best of, but slap 'The Brian Wilson Productions' on it and you've got an angle....

Plus, if one wasn't being so cynical, you could say that they represent a cautious step in Brian's musical development, not to mention it's an obvious Spector imitation - the roster of acts under one producer. Did Brian ever have plans as to what would happen if he did get a hit with one of these satellite acts? Would he have retired from The BB's altogether, or just be a more removed version of his 65 self?

He was skiping tour dates as early as '63 and got Al back in to be the replacement. I don't have any hard Cam Mott-friendly evidence, but it would seem to me that of the Honeys had hit, then he probably would have used that as his ticket out of the Beach Boys. Remember, Phil Spector started his career as a performer just as Brian did.

There are far worse group than the Honeys out there. Why do you think that your opinion of them extends to everyone in the world?

I like them, they're just rather obscure. That was my point. Why not single out urbanite? he actually insults them....

The single doesn't obviously sample the Beach Boys version and has a nice piano intro. It's much better.

Do you think so? There's parts of both versions that I like, it's just that the one version sounds sped-up to my ears, I don't know...

And oh yeah, the reason that there were no real BIG unreleased tracks on the Collectors Choice Honey's CD is because Dan Rutherford is hoping to sucker us all in to buy another comp soon. He doesn't realize that the market is quickly drying up. He thinks (and have heard this from more than one source) that he will help Cap put out a Honey's CD with unreleased tracks and that then he can retire off the revenue. The boy needs a quick kick in the reality button!

Also, Shyin' Away sounds better on the Columbia California USA CD than the Pet Projects CD. I was really kinda bummed when I got the PP CD. Could have been SO much better. But Rob and Co. put way too much bottom end and NO Noise processing on the CD. And Shyin' Away sounds flat (drum sounds dampened) because of the processing. Best version of Fallin' In Love is on the Brian Wilson Sessions box where they correct the fault at the begining of the track. Primo.

Given that they already did this in 1993, with a whole bunch of unreleased stuff - granted, not from the 60s - I'm dubious. That plus I can't think of any 'big' archive Honeys tracks past "You Brought It All On".

I love the Honeys stuff, as well as all the rest of the outside productions that Brian did in the 1960s.  Brian felt more at ease experimenting with these outside groups, and the complexity of a lot of the productions tends to be further ahead than what he was doing with the Beach Boys at any point in time.  It was almost as if he'd experiment with a big production with somebody else first, then try it with the Beach Boys later.  I'm thinking of tracks like "The One You Can't Have", "He's A Doll", and work he did with others such as Sharon Marie's "Thinkin' 'Bout My Baby".

I've heard a cover of "Make The Night Just A Little Longer" by the Honeys (which hasn't been officially released, I think) and, although the recording was quite "muddy", I think a cleaned-up version would be even better than the Shirelles' original version.

The instrumental tracks are interesting. Their voices are (in my opinion) nothing to write home about, but I enjoy the songs anyway. It's probably mostly because of the tracks. I wonder if they weren't hits because of the voices.

The Honeys were great  - apart from the early stuff (and He's a Doll is an all-time classic), the 'Ecstasy' album is a masterwork of 80s kitsch - Girls are vicious.. indeed, and that great synth on Temptation Eyes - and the 'It's Like Heaven' LP has possibly the most brilliantly awful group photo in history. Love them both - but then I like 'Looking back with Love', so there's no hope.

Nope. It's listed on several "import" sites.

Also, I was re-reading an interview with Mark L. from 1996 where he is talking about future plans for the BB catalogue (some of which have happened, alot that have not). He said he wanted to do a Brian Wilson Productions CD along the line of Still I DreamOf You. Wish that would have happened. Still I Dream is such a great set. I was so glad to finally get that CD when it was so hard to find. But someone was selling off their whole BB collection and I got it for like $35 when it was going for like $175 at the time. Now you can't even find it. I was always suprised that no one else in Japan ever re-released it.

Somebody pinged me about Still I Dream Of You. So here is the cover and a review from a 60's music site:

Various Artists
Still I Dream Of You – Rare Works of Brian Wilson
M&M MMCD-409, 1993

The legendary M&M label (from Japan) released this collection of Brian Wilson's non-Beach Boys rarities in 1993. Similar volumes followed, including Toshiba Japan's The Brian Wilson Productions in 2003 and Ace's Pet Projects in 2004. Both of these later releases include tracks not found here (mostly Honeys cuts, some of which can be found on their official collection), but this 32-track set includes over a dozen sides not found elsewhere. The bulk of this set are side projects Wilson produced during the Beach Boys hey-day, when he simply had too much music and too many ideas in his head for one band to record. A few tracks are contemporaneous covers of Wilson tunes.

Tracks
Kenny & The Cadets – Barbie (Bruce Morgan)
Kenny & The Cadets – What is a Young Girl Made Of (Bruce Morgan)
Rachel & The Revolvers – The Revo-Lution (Brian Wilson, Gary Usher)
Rachel & The Revolvers – Number One (Brian Wilson, Gary Usher)
Bob & Sheri – The Surfer Moon (Brian Wilson)
Bob & Sheri – Humpty Dumpty (Bob Norberg, Cheryl Pomeroy)
The Timers – No Go Showboat (Brian Wilson, Roger Christian)
Sharon Marie – Run-Around Lover (Brian Wilson, Mike Love)
The Survivors – Pamela Jean (Brian Wilson)
The Castells – I Do (Brian Wilson, Roger Christian)
Paul Petersen – She Rides With Me (Brian Wilson, Roger Christian)
The Nodaens – Beach Girl (David E. Nowlen, Brian Wilson)
The Honey's – He's a Doll (Brian Wilson)
Gary Usher – Sacramento (Gary Usher, Brian Wilson)
Gary Usher – That's Just the Way I Feel (Gary Usher)
Sharon Marie – Thinkin' 'bout You Baby (Brian Wilson, Mike Love)
Sharon Marie – The Story of My Life (Brian Wilson, Mike Love)
Hale & The Hushabyes – Yes Sir, That's My Baby (Walter Donaldson, Gus Kahn)
