A wonderful, fascinating listen, but has been surpassed by the SOTs of the Pet Sounds period. Still, it's the best thing commercially available. 5.

Fabulous. Manna. I still haven't heard the SOTs, though.

For those of us peons who can't seem to get our hands on the SOT, this is where it's at...

The stereo mix is one of the greatest things in the BB catalogue. Thanks Mr. Linett.

"Let's Go Away For Awhile" in stereo is a powerful, ethereal experience. Matched, though, by the stereo vocals only "Wouldn't It Be Nice." This is a true 5.

I don't think the SOT's surpassed this box.  This box has the stack-o-vocals!!
It also has the brilliant stereo mix and the session highlights.  The SOT's have
about 15 minutes of just rehearing the "You Still Believe in Me" intro.

This is the best box set based on a single album I've ever heard..  and it
never stops being fascinating.

Er, how many box sets based on single albums are there (amongst official releases I mean)?  Pet Sounds is the only one that comes to my mind - and it's a great tribute to the status of the album that there should be such a thing.  But I'd be interested to know if there are others.

Would the recent Born To Run box set count?

I presume you mean the 2 DVDs and 1 CD.  Technically speaking perhaps, but not really the same thing is it?

I honestly didn't know what was in the box set.   I just saw while Christmas shopping.  So, no, I guess it's a LITTLE bit different the PS set.   Smiley

Sometimes i find that i like listening to the sessions better than the completed versions of the songs, some of these tracks make really great instrumentals.  I think thats probably one of the most amazing things about the BB is that you could just listen to the vocals, music, or them all together and its like 3 different songs.  I always picture non existent movie scense when i hear the instrumentals,  looking at this i dont think im making sense anymore, does anyone else at least feel somewhat what im saying?

I at times prefer the drumming on the "chorus" of Wouldn't It Be Nice, and the climatic parts of Let's Go Away For A While.

Well, of course, it's great going deeper into all this stuff - there's so much going on under the vocals.   Over and over again, it's  a very rewarding listening experience.  Don't Talk, for example, is tremendous.

0 stars.  This box set ruined my life.  Before it, I was a confident, creative, originally inclined musician.  After it, I'm a broken, confused, basketcase.

Now, that's not really the boxed set's fault, is it?

It is the direct consequence of me listening to the set.  Perhaps it's not anybody's "fault" but I still blame the interaction between myself and the set for ruination of my life.

If it makes you feel better, your convincing me to get it improved my life (even though I failed a mid-term shortly afterwards).

Hey  Mitchell,

Is your tag a reference to "Eegah" from MST3K?

Well spotted! It's repeated in the MST3K episode of Mitchell, too!

There are several in jazz, particularly for Miles Davis.  There are multiple-disc boxes of all the sessions for Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way, and Tribute to Jack Johnson, as well as others I can't remember now.

Also, a few years ago there was an expansive box of The Stooges' Fun House, where every take of every song from the sessions was included.

In this day and age, I think just about everybody should be putting out sessions and stuff.  It'd be so easy, might as well get it out there before the fans die.
