First I wanna say that I think the '67 Hawaii-versions with brian were really good considering the circumstances. Their singing is very good and I love how they tried to do the studio-version instead of doing an alternative like in later years (which of course was also great).
My question though, when did the BBs played H&V for the first time in concert after the Hawaii-shows? I don't think it was in the setlist at that time, although it was what you could call a hit

I'm thinking maybe the February 24th 1971 Carnegie Hall show. They opened with it.

Thanks !
I wonder why they waited so long to play it. I mean back in '67 they had rehearsed the tune and it was a no. 12 hit I believe. So why didn't they do it in concert but still do "Graduation day" (no matter how nice that one is)? Doesn't make much sense to me.

At least one member of the band is on tape referring to it, at length, as a giant bomb in the latter part of the 60s.

Yes, Mike does say that very thing. As directed by Brian, who is producing that particluar 'session' (during the 9/11/67 Wally Heider recordings, I believe): the first version that hit the collectors circuit most convienently stopped before you could hear him calling the shots and cracking up at Mike's dissing of "H&V".

But only because they expected a no.1-hit. It still was no.12 though (I believe wikipedia says top ten in Cashbox). And maybe it would've fared better with some promotion in concerts. They played "Darlin'" too on a regular basis after it came out. And that one didn't do as well as H&V. Plus their status as an progressive, contemporary act would have benefitted probably

This still seems to be one of the greatest myths out there-that Mike blasted H&V, thus proving how little he thought of the SMiLE music.

Argh, I had read about it being a put-on but had better memory for what I had heard. Thanks for the correction.

But doesn't the put-on itself suggest that the belief that it was something of a bomb existed within the group? Only speculation, I know. But as some say, all humor is about pain.  Only Mike and Brian knew for sure, and who knows who knows now?

To me, H+V is one of the few BB songs that is just as good live as it is in the studio. The In Concert or Endless Harmony version (interchangeable) are just very powerful and spirited. Marcella I much prefer live. Aside from that, and also "Keepin' the Summer Alive" and "Wild Honey" with Blondie, I can't think of many others. Anyone?

Any of the KTSA songs sound better live than on record to me. The Wild Honey tunes do, too.

I like a live "Do It Again", and, whether wrapping up a "surf medley" or on its own, "Surfin' USA", and finally, I prefer a rockin' "Barbara Ann" and "Fun, Fun, Fun" to the studio versions.

Quick Edit: While they don't match the studio versions in production or performance, I liked the way the group went from "Sloop John B" right into "Wouldn't It Be Nice", especially when Carl was around. It was magical.

I agree with all of the ones above as being better live. I think Lady Lynda was often better live and I am probably in the minority here but I think California Girls Live where they sped it up a bit works much better.

For me, the definitive version of Surf's Up was, is, and probably always will be, Brian's live rendition for "Inside Pop."

Certainly very spirited, but I'd take the studio harmonies over the live ones.

Forgot the mention "Darlin'" as another prefered live one, both Live in London and In Concert, not the Knebworth one for me though, a bit too sterile. "Let the Wind Blow" transformed into gospel as well--just as good as the studio although surprisingly my favorite version is from IJWMFTT, I know I'm alone on that though.

Lady Lynda was a killer live, yeah.

Thanks for all the responses.

I'd happily be amongst the first to slag SIP but the live versions from both Wembly and Lorelei, Germany really do kick butt ... as long as one can tolerate some of the abysmal lyrics.

Way back when we had the master plan, we were havin' fun fun fun as America's band, we went out rockin' with-a Rhonda and Barbara Ann... LOL LOL LOL

There's an interview on Youtube from 1990 where My Glove says the next BB album is going to be "a cross between Graceland and the Joshua Tree"!!
