Bruce has always been there for the Beach Boys...period.  And the first member of the Beach Boys family to win a Grammy.

Deirdre is a great song. I love it. No wedgie from me.

This seems like a good time to ask: years and years ago a couple guys told me that Brian was co-credited on that because Bruce said he was partly inspired by what we then called "Tune X" or "Tones", which we now know as "Holiday" or "On A Holiday".  I guess the Badman book pretty well dispels that, but has anyone else ever heard any version of that?  I don't think these guys (who were very knowledgeable for the time) would have dreamed it up- it seems likely that Bruce must have said something slightly similar, somewhere, sometime.

I have no idea about that.

Tones is actually its own song. It was misappropriated on early Smile bootlegs over the track Holidays. Tones is a Carl composition, April 1967. Sounds like Penny Lane.

Bruce did say at some point that Brian wrote about one line, but Bruce was feeling generous, so he gave him the co-credit.

Bruce said that Brian was throwing him dozens of little four-word phrases that Bruce removed. He only kept two of Brian's contributions.

Right- that's what I got from the Badman book.  I'm still intrigued by the older story (but then, all kinds of stuff made the rounds back then and a lot of it has just disappeared since).  By straining, I can almost imagine I hear some kind of resemblance to the SMiLE track.

Dr. UNH, we called it "Tones" then (as well as "Tune X") because that's how it was titled on vinyl (and early CD) bootlegs.  The story was that "Tones" was written as part of an incompete technical spec on the tape box.  We know better now, but that was the story then.  Carl's "Tones" was pretty well unknown at the time, and I believe I've still never heard it.

Wow, I appreciate the promotion but you can call me Jason. It was called Tones then because that was all anyone knew, unfortunately. Thankfully we have the work of our friends here who have dispelled years of rumors and given us the right titles for the tracks.

It's been just amazing to see this age of enlightenment come.  I used to think that the little we knew of SMiLE was just about all that was knowable.  All you ever got was "I don't remember", "only Brian knows (or knew)", and "I don't want to talk about it".

I can remember the frustration of thinking we'd never know for sure who played on what, to any degree.  I didn't think the information had been kept.  Was there really a Lei'd In Hawaii album?  I read the Lewisohn Beatles Recording Sessions book and thought "why not Brian?  At least the sixties!"  And I thought that the answer was that the information and many of the tapes didn't exist. Boy, have we been blessed since then.

But compare & contrast "we're together again" with "deirdre".

As for Bruce: a wonderful guy, whose memoirs would be to die for. Some of his records certainly are.

BRI Corp. is Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Carl Wilson's Estate (Justyn and Jonah Wilson, his sons). Bruce has never been and never will be a member of this voting organization.
