I decided to do my own 1969-70 "What If" compilation that I call Add Some Music.  I'm sure many of you have done something similar.

Yep, I did one with that exact title about 10 years ago. My tracklist was as follows:

01 Breakaway
02 Celebrate The News
03 San Miguel
04 Cotton Fields (45 version)
05 Games Two Can Play
06 I Just Got My Pay
07 Good Time
08 Susie Cincinnati
09 Loop De Loop
10 Over The Waves
11 When Girls Get Together
12 Lady
13 Sound Of Free
14 seasons In The Sun
15 Soulful Old Man Sunshine
16 Big Sur (original version)
17 HELP Is On The Way
18 My Solution
19 Fourth Of July
20 Barbara

I like that, looks like quite a cohesive (and fairly Brian-centered) album. But why leave off "Be With Me"? That's such a killer song, if mostly in terms of Dennis' vocal performance and the overall atmosphere (which is so genuinely dark and eerie it's hard to believe this came out so shortly after the light and good-natured Friends album...).

Good question, as Be With Me was the one I was in two minds about. The only reason it was absent was that I'm not massively keen on it, although it could easily be swapped out with Never learn Not To Love.

great thread!
I'm liking what I'm seeing,
I'll try to submit one soon as I love these types of threads.
BTW, on a MIU mix that was on the 1st page, I saw a song called Thank You Baby...What's the word on that?
I've never heard of that...let alone from that era.

BTW, while I'm at it, I was gonna put Skatetown USA on a mix for LA, but I couldn't remember if it was recorded during that era or KTSA?

I've got a home-made 21-songs album called 'The Beach Boys' Lost Album' mostly formed with songs that were bonuses on the twofers. There's also 'The Little Girl I Once Knew', 'Trombone Dixie' etc. Mostly songs that didn't make any album at their time of recording :

01.The Lord's Prayer (this works great as an opener-just like 'Our Prayer' and 'Think About The Days')
02.I Do
03.All Dressed Up For School
04.Graduation Day
05.The Little Girl I Once Knew
06.Trombone Dixie
07.Lonely Days
08.Old Folks at Home/Ol' Man River
09.Sail Plane Song
10.San Miguel
11.Loop-de-Loop (Flip Flop Flyin' In An Airplane)
12.Games Two Can Play
13.We're Together Again
14.Soulful Old Man Sunshine (incredible song)
15.I Just Got My Pay
16.H.E.L.P. Is On The Way
17.4th Of July (another brilliant tune)
18.Our Team
19.Sea Cruise
20.Winter Symphony (love this one a lot, too)
21.It's A Beautiful Day

  KEEPIN' THE SUMMER ALIVE

 1) Keepin' the Summer Alive
 2) Don't Fight the Sea
 3) Santa Ana Winds
 4) Daybreak (Over the Ocean)
 5) California Feeling

 6) Goin' On
 7) Stevie
 Cool Love Remember Me
 9) Endless Harmony
10)Still I Dream Of It

Far more the product of individuals than a band but better song for song. The inclusion of "Love Remember Me" cripples BAMBU after the loss of "Baby Blue" and "Love Surrounds Me" on L.A.

Stevie wasn't recorded until after KTSA was released. Great song, though!

No need to really tamper with any pre-'76 albums as far as i'm concerned; LA however has always seemed like an album that had the potential to be really fantastic, rather than just plain good, as it ultimately was.
My thoughts on it are this... After the sales/quality disaster of MIU it seems Carl and Dennis were, quite rightly, being allowed to rule the roost, and to me it's a real shame that they didn't draw more from Bambu. So i'd include more songs from that album, plus some of the top quality tracks the band recorded around this time which were likewise inexplicably left to gather dust in the vaults, and i'd lose HCNT (because, and i don't care what it's defenders say, it's an embaressment) and i'd use the far superior Adult/Child version of Shortenin' Bread (yeah, production-wise that farty synth doesn't fit, but then neither does the screeching guitar on the released version, so hey ho...). Anyway, here is my dream LA. Sequence it yourselves and listen, it works brilliantly:

SIDE ONE
1. Good Timin'
2. It's Not Too Late (the delicate fade of this track segues perfectly into the quiet chiming opening of Full Sail)
3. Full Sail
4. Angel Come Home
5. California Feelin' (the solo Dennis vocal at the start of Love Surrounds Me works as a great contrast following the full group harmony ending of California Feelin')
6. Love Surrounds Me
7. Lady Lynda

SIDE TWO
8. Santa Ana Winds (the lovely LA version of course, which has none of the dated tacky-sounding production as heard on the KTSA version)
9. Lookin' Down The Coast
10. Sumahama
11. Baby Blue
12. Goin' South
13. Shortenin' Bread (Adult/Child version)

Right, the alternate LP might have been ready by late summer 1980.

That would complicate matters. In any event, a better LP than KTSA might have been assembled in 1980.

Take the best tracks from LOVE YOU, PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE, GOING PUBLIC and BLONDIE CHAPLIN (all 1977 releases) and what do you get? A real mess.  Cheesy

I have tried to combine parts of LOVE YOU and POB along with other material  for a "BEACH BOYS '77" type of record...but it never quite works. "What's Wrong" and "Honkin' Down the Highway" aren't bad as a one-two or two-one punch. The melancholy of "Moonshine" dovetails with "The Night Was So Young". To me anyway.

Here's my 15 Big Ones/ Love You mash. It's called "Brian's Back...And He's Pissed"

1. It's OK
2. Roller Skating Child
3. Mona
4. Had To Phone Ya (end is cut at 1:40 just after Marilyn says "Hey, Brian!")
5. I'll Bet He's Nice
6. Good Time

7. That Same Song (Gospel Choir version)
8. Susie Cincinnati
9. The Night Was So Young
10. Ding Dang (Oh yeah, you know you love it)
11. Airplane
12. Love Is A Woman (obligatory)

I like to cut most of the songs so they don't have fade outs, makes for a much easier flow. It was hard to add in enough 15BO tracks which were actually decent. But I enjoy this tracklisting better than listening to the two separately.

Seriously? Al's problem with using folding chairs as weapons in '61 is extremely well documented.
