I saw the Who last night

I saw Roger and Pete at the Nokia theater in Los Angeles. It was a great show, really powerful stuff.

Just one problem. I don't like the guy who plays bass, he really blew on the bass solo for My Generation. I really don't know why they've kept him this long. This is the third time I've seen them. The first time I saw them, John Entwistle was on bass.

Cool! How were Daltrey's vocals?

Amazing!

They played 'Love Reign O'er Me' and Roger nailed it. They also played an overlooked song from Who's Next that's one of my favorites, 'Getting in Tune'.

Roger's voice really hasn't changed much. I guess he didn't smoke and abuse himself too much.

How was Pete?  Are he and Roger half as energetic as in days of old?

They played with a lot of energy. I was especially moved by the encore of Tommy songs near the end of the show.

Unfortunately it hit me for the first time that this is not really the Who. Pete spoke a little in between songs and mentioned that what he and Roger were trying to do is EVOKE not EMULATE the music of the Who. Emulate means 'to copy' which is not what the point of the concert was. They are trying to capture the spirit of something they created a long time ago, but its still not the real thing.

No, not the same.  But Pete did write, play,  and sing the music and Roger was the lead rock singer up front with Pete who put the punch and power into the vocals.

It would be technically possible to have a rhythm section to sound like Keith and John and essentially recapture the original sound (minus the youthfull energy of course)


but on stage you can't replace the personality and charisma of the original band.


Kinda like that Stones movie that came out in 2008.
