I've got the Beach Boys, my friends got the Stones

I did a search on here and on Wikipedia but I cant find info about it. I'm curious if anyone can shed light on the 'Sea of Tunes' compilation. I've seen it on bootleggers collections but I've never heard a copy of it on my own. I understand its like 30 or so volumes of all the Beach Boys material. Who exactly put this compilation together? How was it released to the public etc? And most importantly, how big is each volume and what do they usually contain?

If these questions have been answered before, please point me to the right direction and I'll be grateful!

thanks Smiley

Yes, I think I probably do.

In a sedate, English way, of course.

The Dumb Angel releases say that it's an "imprint" or something of Sea Of Tunes. It covers mostly 70s and later material, though some others. The Sea Of Tunes releases are titled "Unsurpassed Masters" vol. 1-20 and contains nothing past 1969. Some of the releases are almost ridiculously detailed. 8 cds on Today, anyone?

I'm not totally certain, but virtually none. SOT/UM covers the 60s, DA covers the 70s and beyond. Hardly any repeating from what I can tell.

Then after getting some thirty-five cd sets, you still need to get most of the concert bootlegs, Paley/Was sessions, loose files from here and there, Vigotone SMiLE, Leggo My Ego, Get The Boot, Goodbye Surfing Hello God and possibly many others.  Grin

The cassettes. You forgot the cassettes.

There's stuff I've heard on cassette I've never heard anywhere else.

I'd love non-mp3 sourced copies of the above..   but I'd also recommend "Heroes & Vibrations."
Excellent sound quality and some cool unused sections.

Cassettes! Dang. I've some catching up to do. What about vinyl? Is every piece of music from vinyl boots on cd as well?

And thanks for mentioning Heroes and Vibrations, totally forgot that one.

I had a dream once that I found "Unsurpassed Masters Vols 22 and 23" at a record store.  The alternate Sunflower and Surf's Up albums.  That one was a real drag to wake up from.  Oddly enough, there was a vocals only mix of "Friends" on there, so maybe I found a more complete alternate Friends album in my dream as well.

You think that's crazy, I had a dream that I heard an unreleased Beatles acetate ca. 1964 and I woke up singing the damn thing!  It was a great song too!

In a normal situation, I would have grabbed my cassette recorder and laid it down in demo form with my acoustic guitar.  Regretably, I'd left my recorder at my guitarist's pad the night before at band practice.  By the time I made it into work, the song was gone from my head.  Angry Embarrassed

Awesome!
I once had a dream that I found a mint copy of the Swan pic sleeve of She Loves You at a yardsale!
Then a month later I found a slightly used copy for 10 bucks at a thriftstore!

Your dream would be more interesting if Winston Wong were the clerk at the record store.
