Normally I wouildn't bring up somethng crazy like this, but it is so ridiculous that I must. Besides I like making people laugh. Read this thread on the Elvis collectors board. I am there with my real name Mike Eder. Anyhow there are characters who say some wild things. Make sure you read the posts on Madonna vrs Pet Sounds. Enjoy

That Genesm (or whatever) guy is an embarassment. I couldn't read all of it, I jumped from him saying that Brian "needed ten more Mike Loves to set him straight about SMiLE" to Madonna trouncing everything on Pet Sounds. What a tin-eared fool.

It's going good. I am about 40 percent done with the very final draft. When it's finished everyone here will know about it first.
Thank you very much for the articles. Anyone that has helped me on here who wants their name in the book PM me and I would be glad to include you.

Well thank you. The book will be a song by song look at each original Beach Boys release with a lot of biography thrown in. There are a lot of new interviews and things I dug up. Some things I have discussed here others I haven't. It will be pretty vinyl oriented and will let people know of every US issue, boot, or unique release (like the Honey's It's Like Heaven)in the format. Of course CD buyers will find much of interest too because as I mentioned the meat of the book is the original Beach Boys releases and a lot of behind the scenes stories. If you have read Tim Reilly's book Tell Me Why on the Beatles then you basically know the format. Of course my views are somewhat subjective, but I think the facts I present in each chapter balance it out. I tried very hard not to follow what anybody else ever wrote about the group and just try to let my judgment of the Beach Boys career as a whole present itself. I do have an interested publisher but not a contract yet. I have kept pretty low key about it so far, but I do want to say this board and everyone on it has inspired me and helped convince me it was a worthwhile project. I was afraid at one point that no one would accept the view that every Beach Boys was important. I now know that's not true.

I should say not. It's obvious the guy thinks pretty highly of himself as a judge, but the truth is that from either one of those comments I quoted, the guy has no sense of artistry, just mediocrity.

Usually I would let something let that pass, but it was so bizarre that I thought we could all get a chuckle.

This sounds very cool, i'll buy it for sure, you can never have enough Beach Boys books! Will it include song-by-songs on the solo stuff and unreleased stuff too?

That Genesim seems like the type of guy who would tell someone with a manic depression to 'quit being a pu**y and start acting normal'...

I read most of the discussion and I'm not taking sides but I think he(genesim) made some interesting arguments in the first two pages - later the topic is just about throwing sh*t mostly. I hate it when some idiots started to attack he's person instead of his arguments just because he doesn't agree with the majority. I hate it when sh*t like that happens and even more so 'cos it has happened to me personally numerous times because of my politically incorrect opinions on some issues.
Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn't make him an idiot, a joke or stupid.
It is very frustrating how alike all people always are. Everywhere when ever there is an argument it is the same. Human beings are sticking to the formula so hard that it makes absolutely no hope for the future; history repeats itself and the only thing human beings are able to advance on this earth is the destruction of the living conditions of this earth. it's pretty depressing when one stops to think about it all.

It's pretty obvious that "genesim" equates greatness with record sales. The early Beach Boys records outsold PET SOUNDS; therefore they are better. Madonna outsells Brian Wilson, so she's the greater artist. All critics' darlings are overrated since they don't sell in the big numbers. There's nothing you can do to change that kind of opinion. I'm curious, however, why he would name himself after a musician/band that hasn't sold very many CDs in the last two decades.

I agree it's pretty pointless to back up quality of music with record sales.
Parents should stop buying their kids crap like boy bands and such. But what can you do? We live in a world of consumer culture hell and the masses are doing excatly as the media tells them. I think it's obvious, and as long as people don't change their attitudes about what is important and what is not most people people are gonna continue acting like sheep and not giving a sh*t about anything. The horrible state of commercial music and the fact that some(many!) people actually think that (record)sales are a proof of the products quality just proves how f*cked up and shallow the western world today is and in the end how much herd animals people are. If somebody hates these things too then stop supporting it.
Maybe sales are a proof of something when it comes to rubber boots or something like that but art, and music is art, should never be appreciated based on sales.

I think it was a good debate, and damn well-informed for a non-Beach Boys Message Board. Let's be fair, the Genesim dude only started those Madonna rants after she was thrown into the debate as a cheap shot.
The only thing that bothered me was the notion that Smiley Smile was the Beach Boys 'taking over'. That doesn't begin to explain that beautiful and unique album.

There are separate sections on those and they are fairly long. Obviously if I did a song by song look on all the boots the book would be 1000 pages or more. I focus on the vinyl boots in depth, mention other unreleased songs when I feel it's important. The solo stuff is in there, some I examine closely, some I don't. The main thrust of the book is the original Beach Boys group releases, but I actually talk about a little of everything.

Well in this case I tried politely explaining why I feel different and genesim got insulting. I feel I overall kept myself in check though you can see from my later posts that I gave up on the guy. Again I posted all this here because it was just so off beat that I thought you all would like to read it. To each their own of course, but still I couldn't help raising an eyebrow. I don't mind debate but I expect someone to respect what I feel too.

I thought that the Madonna debate was interesting at times. One thing that could have been added is why Brian may be regarded higher than Madonna. Not sales vs. art.
Brian, back in the day could write, produce, play multiple instruments, arrange and generallly do it all. I wonder how much Madonna could do. She can dance and sing, but how much of the actual songwriting did she do? I just can't imagine her sitting down at a piano and figuring out notes and arrangements etc. Put Madonna alone in a studio and tell her to come up with something without others and do the same to Brian (not saying Brian didn't have help along the way either). To me she was more of an image that was sold and marketed. She was great at doing this, but I am not convinced that she was the musical brians behind her music. Also, wasn't one of the songs on Ray of Light a partial lift from Feel Flows?
