With All the Internet charting of POB, how will it do it in the Billboard Top 200?

Conservatively i've voted Top 100.  I believe that it deserves to be higher, and i hope it gets there, but in this fickle market geared entirely towards teens [what is WITH these record companies, anyway?!], it may well not.

Not sure what will happen, but what the heck, I'll go for top 40!

It seems to be getting quite some media coverage, so it should be able to make the top 100... I would be surprised though if it'd go any higher than, say, #80...

I wonder if it will be stuck on their "Catalog" chart, instead of the Top 200, since it's basically a reissue...I mean, I HOPE not...

I was looking at the criteria for appearing on the catalog chart as compared to the main chart:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Pop_Catalog_Albums

It certainly looks like POB is destined for the catalog chart.

I had to call every record store in the valley yesterday to find POB. Only one had a copy still left. They flew off the shelves here. I think I must have bought the last copy in Salt Lake.

I've got to say, I'll be absolutely gobsmacked if it does that well in the UK.

EDIT: Colour me gobsmacked - it looks like its done even better than that.

Would be so cool if it charted as a reissue higher than it originally did.  Grin

I've been wondering this myself.

I can tell you a little bit through my recent experience with DAYLIGHT KISSING NIGHT charting on amazon.

I'd be surprised if it charted as a catalog because of all the new material on the disc.  I would think it would be the regular chart.

The bottom rung for the Billboard Top 200 is scanning roughly 5,000 units the first week.  I've been told that includes all the pre-orders, though I haven't been able to confirm that.  I would hazard a guess that the Amazon sales are probably between 1,000 and 2,000 units.  It could be a lot higher but not much lower.

I think it's likely to make the Billboard top 200.  I'm hoping it will chart well up there but amazon ran out the first day of release, and people are reporting they're having trouble finding the CD.  That means either Sony or more likely retailers underestimated the demand for the album and if they're not available they can't sell and they can't contribute to the chart position.  So my gut feeling is that it might not.  I think it's realistic to hope for something anywhere up to about #75 in the charts, but I'd be surprised (though very happy) if it got that high.

Nonesuch (or Warners) reportedly underestimated the demand for BWPS as well.  To refresh everyone's memories, it was #1 on Amazon for several days and managed to debut at #13 on Billboard here in the U.S.  I'm sure it was delivered in much greater quantities than POB/Bambu.  Yesterday mid-morning I went to Target and Best Buy (they were both sold out) before heading to Borders, where the girl working there had to pull it off her stock cart for me (thankfully she knew exactly what I was talking about, even though she was only about 20).

Yeah, I don't think it will make the main Billboard chart, since there are rules about reissues. I know there was some controversy earlier this year when the Thriller 25th Anniversary Edition was released. Had those rules not been in place, the Thriller reissue would have been number one.

It's upthread that POB is poised to make #8 in the UK chart, which would be, simply, stunning.  My hopes for a higher placement in the states are raised.  Andrew, you may be right, but I hope you're wrong.  I'd like to see it in the main chart.

Just checked and I don't quite believe it myself, but back in 1977, POB didn't chart in the UK. The album chart rundown this Sunday is going to be very interesting...  Grin

I think it might keep selling, because my sense is there's a wave of publicity building behind it.  Dennis has the potential to be one of those "found" hipster icons like Nick Drake.  All the elements are there.  It makes good copy.

When I went to Borders or Barnes and Noble (I don't remember) to buy it on June 17, I couldn't find it. But a guy looked it up and found it in the Country section !?! Who on earth would classify it as country? Especially here in Texas!! But in other stores I saw it in the rightful pop/rock section.

People have said this many times over on the board so I'm sorry if I'm being redundant, but it could be because there's also a country artist named Dennis Wilson and "Dennis Wilson" is tagged as country in their database.

But that's why POB/Bambu appears on Amazon's country chart.
