WHY has there never been a moment in my whole life where the Kinks Katalog was in decent shape?

It's 2008, we've got a doohickey on Mars, I think, and STILL...no box set.  No Great Lost Kinks Album EVER. No decent version EVER of Kinks-Size or Kinkdom in anything like original form. Their great albums are treated like army brats, moving from one half-assed reissue label to another with no real deluxe treatment like Bowie's great albums, Elton John's great albums, Clapton's great albums, the Who's great albums, or any of what Dusty Springfield or the Zombies or Marvin Gaye get. Village Green has had a few fly-by-night stabs, but that's really it.

Whose krank did these guys step on, for all of time?

Maybe they need to reunite to get the wheels in motion.....

Then again, that would probably only bring us another Kinky Kompilation.....

So yes, I'm with you, like the mighty Jabberjaw, they could do with some more respect. The sooner the better. Grin

I'd be interested in getting their studio albums altogether and available like ABK did with the Stones a few years ago.
Some of the stuff I have NEVER heard.  I have one to many compilations to not have half of their recorded ouput in my collection.

Guys, it just makes me friggin' Krazy.  donald, your suggestion about issuing them uniformly like the Stones is just what the doctor ordered- even if it was just done according to label. But unlike the Stones discs, I need bonus tracks. Cardboard sleeves would be nice.  I'd shell out for all the ones I have all over again if they were given the treatment.  I suspect a lot of us would.

Two (2) early Kinks albums never given correct treatment- the equivalent of dumping the contents of Little Deuce Coupe onto a disc with Surfer Girl and just saying "it wasn't their best." And then deleting it. There's history there, and there's more than sufficient interest.  The Kinks have certainly earned the honor of having their whole catalog treated properly, and not like they were Freddie and the Dreamers.

And I wonder if really decent sound is a possibility?

I wish Ian Wagner was here to get in on this conversation. Somebody e-mail him.

Not sure if you saw it-but there was a fantastic version of Something Else released with bonus tracks. I bought it-but haven't seen it in stores since-had Dead End Street, Autumn Almanac and a few others on it. There first two albums were also released in real nice packages with bonus tracks.  There is also a nice version of their third album out-with bonus tracks. I have seen that there are multiple versions-you might check on Amazon-for newer versions with bonus tracks

Castle reissued all of the Kinks Pye/Reprise albums about ten years ago with lots of bonus tracks (the early albums have more bonus tracks than original tracks, I believe, including great things like Ray's demo of "I Go To Sleep"). Unfortunately, lots of folks complained about the mastering (of course, the sound quality was never too good on those 60s albums, but I tend to agree the remastering was not optimum). Now it appears that Sanctuary reissued some of these same albums again about four years ago. I'm not sure if the sound has been improved. I did pick up the deluxe edition of VILLAGE GREEN from Sanctuary which did sound better than the Castle reissue, but as much as I love the band, I can't buy all of their albums a fourth time (I own the vinyl editions, the first Reprise CD issues and the Castle reissues)!

The RCA stuff was released roughly ten years ago on their own KONK label also with bonus tracks.

Of course the Arista stuff and 70's RCA stuff were give nice (still avaliable) reissues.

The early stuff is avaliable in 180gram vinyl editions and sound/look great, but they go for about $25something bucks a pop!

It's a few years late, much like the Zombies reunion, or a potential BBs reunion, but still pretty cool.

and if you are interested in finding anything else (Then, Now and Inbetween ) about the kinks and or keeping up with the latest kinks, Ray and Dave news these are the top places to look...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDlc4NApv1U  ( this is the promo video of Ray's amazing musical Come Dancing which ran in London for two months this year  and may come to NYC next year! ) Ran September 13th 2008, thru November 8th at the Stratford east theatre in London, and I should know cuz I was there!

to get on the kinls preservation email digest list, send an email to Neil at this address; neil@kinks.it.rit.edu
and just tell him to add your email address to the list to get the kinks preservation society digest emailed to you.
It generally comes out anywhere from as much as everyday to a few times a week depending on how much news there is
andhow many postes he receives.
