Why do several BB songs start with the word "well?"

Little Deuce Coupe - "Well I'm not braggin"
California Girls - "Well east coast girls are hip"
Don't Worry Baby - "Well it's been building up inside me"
Fun, Fun, Fun - "Well, she got her daddy's car"
Help Me Rhonda " Well, since she put me down"

Well? Can anyone tell me why? ( This was mentioned in the Bob Greene book "When We Get To Surf City" as an example of some of the less loftier conversations among the band members )

Well?

Because it's a nice word for the pick-up beat?

Because it sounds better sung as opposed to how it would look on paper?

Maybe they were all big Jack Benny fans?

Elvis made a joke about this at his 1968 NBC special refearing to his songs. It's just a good rock and roll starter word.

Didn't Reagan start a lot of sentences with 'Well'? Must be something in the Californian sun. Wink

Lots of people do that because it makes the songs more conversational, which makes them more honest and universal.  People do that in conversation a lot, too.

You don't say "I'm going home.  Bye."...

You'd break the ice with "Well, I'm going home.... bye!"

If you drop the 'well' off each of those songs they lose a little bit of personality and sound more like a recital instead of a conversation.

Well, for the record, according to www.beachboysarchives.com the opening word for Help Me Rhonda was originally going to be "Uh,..."  You'd have to agree that "Well" sounds more appealing.

There's a few Springsteen numbers begin the same way.

WELL, there are also quite a few lines that end in 'now'

"Cuz we got a lot of things to do, now"
"I had to prove that I could make it alone, now"

And quite a few with the word "columnated," too. Well, one.

Fun Fun Fun is the worst offender of this. Each line in each verse ends with the word "now". And each verse begins with "well".

Although it's not a song, per se, don't forget about "Bull Session With 'Big Daddy'".

"Well, uh...are we on...?"
