I've read that Capitol was putting out memo's of a 10 song SMiLE release in late '67 that would feature the original SMiLE cover and booklet. I've also heard about a proposed 1972 version that Stephen Desper and Carl Wilson attempted to assemble. I know that Brian worked on a one-minute and 46 second cut of 'Been way too long' for the 10 song SMiLE and that Carl mentioned 'I love to say da da' would incorporate 'cool cool water' on the 1972 version. I think i also heard that both Bruce and Mike were publicly proclaiming that these releases were imminent. Other than that, i'm pretty hazy on the whole subject. If anyone has any more info, i'd really appreciate it.

My understanding is that 1) The 1967 post Smiley Smile SMILE album was discussed only in the Karl Engemann memo. What this memo proves is that Brian wasn't ruling out a return to Smile later in the year after Smiley Smile was done. Clearly nothing really came of this-for many reasons 2) The 1972 Smile was part of the Warners contract- The group had to promise that Brian would be involved in their records and also threw out the notion, to entice Warners, that they'd finish Smile. Brian apparently was unaware of this promise-or if he knew about it, he didn't really intend to do it. In their Feb 72 press conference-where they announced that Rickie and Blondie were joining-Carl, Rielley and Dennis promised Smile would be completed-but this may have just been a way to get publicity-possibly Reilley's idea. An article shows that Carl did go through all the Smile tapes in 72, but ultimately again nothing really came of it- The BBs lost 50,000 for not delivering the Smile album in 73. Clearly-Smile had to be finished with Brian-so if he didn't want to do it-nothing would happen. I think that you are incorrect to assert that Brian mixed any short version of Been Way Too Long. I have seen no evidence of him touching that song after 1968

Thanks for the clarity Ian. I actually got the 'been way too long' reference from the Look, listen, vibrate, smile! book. (pg 289). It states that Brian worked on the song on 10/28/67 and added vocals on 11/1/67. It describes the song as "snazzy" and mentions that it is unreleased. i have a version of 'Can't wait too long' floating around that contains a 40 second snippet on the end that's NOT on the smiley smile two-fer. It begins with wordless vocals then shifts to piano, bass, hand claps and i think i can hear an acoustic guitar. more wordless vocals come in and the song fades. Is THIS 'been way too long'? This song has always confused me. I apologize if i seem out of the loop here.

David Leaf alluded to it possibly being SMiLE in the SS/WH liner notes. Guess he was either mistaken or was just trying to stir up more debate and speculation among fans.

The "Brother 9002 was going to be the 10 track Smile" theory was started by Brad Elliott in DAG #2. At the time it seemed a reasonable supposition, but later info refuted this idea. There was a cover prepped for Lei'd In Hawaii, btw

Actually, it's Mike saying SMiLE will come out, and Carl singing "Wonderful".

The tapes weren't up to scratch - one gig was reportedly technically sub-par, the other was a bad performance. The band went into Wally Heider's studio 9/11/67 with the intent of recreating the shows, but for whatever reason, gave up and elected to do a new studio album. Hence, Wild Honey.

Those shows were pretty lacking in the instrumental parts. Adding Ed Carter, the Dragon Bros., and the occasional horn section the following year really helped out the sound of their live shows.

Speaking of Lei'd, I remember someone posted the original sleeve notes to wild Honey, when "The Letter" was on the track list, and didn't the notes say that this was a preview of a live album to come recorded in several locations? And that was why the Thanksgiving/Christmas 67 shows were recorded, to get a live album to follow Wild Honey?

Live albums are an interesting subject. It is clear that the group considered them numerous times. 1) As a follow up to the Concert LP-they recorded the two Chicago shows-with Brian-in March 1965. One assumes they weren't happy with the tapes-or maybe the Party idea sounded fresher 2) They recorded the Oct 22 1966 Ann Arbor shows-again with Brian present (though this time mostly offstage)-at the show the auduience was told that the shows were being recorded for a live album 3) They recorded the Hawaii 67 shows 4) They recorded some Nov 1967 shows 5) They recorded a bunch of July 1968 shows 6) They recorded and released an album from Dec 1968 shows in London 7) They taped numerous shows in 72-though they ended up using shows taped in 73 for the Concert album Some of the BB-Chicago shows were recorded 9) Knebworth 1980 was recorded for a possible concert LP

That brings up another point: Anything happening with the new Beach Boys site ? There were talks of releases of old live performances.

I have a feeling that this is precisely what held the site up-there are a lot of legal issues involved with releasing music on a website
