I just came back from seeing Funny People and the film soundtrack used a bunch of tracks that were on recent Beatles and John Lennon mix cds I made myself. It made me smile but it was also kind of creepy, now I know a little bit what Brian Wilson must have experienced when he thought certain movies were directly addressing him.

I'm not sure how well this works, but this is my best of 2009 comp. so far.  A few songs will likely be dropped when some better stuff turns up, but I still like all of these songs for various reasons.  I kept it down to a one track per artist minimum so I think it's pretty diverse.  I tried to make it random, but it goes in order of track name.

1. Out Of The Blue - Julian Casablancas
2. Hymn - Brett Anderson
3. Vanity Kills - Ian Brown
4. Think I Need It Too - Echo & The Bunnymen
5. The Strangers - St. Vincent
6. Paper Scissors Stone - Portico Quartet
7. Shape Shifter - Systems Officer
8. Julie & The Moth Man - Kasabian
9. Riot On An Empty Street - Kings Of Convenience
10. Poisonous Intent - Bad Lieutenant
11. Papillon - Editors
12. One More Chance - Bloc Party
13. My Propellor - Arctic Monkeys
14. Mirror's Image - The Horrors
15. Look Into The Light - Graham Coxon
16. Kingdom Of Rust - Doves
17. Games For Days - Julian Plenti
18. Broken Love Song - Peter Doherty

I've got  a favorites of 2009 playist as a work in progress om my mp3 player. Possible future inclusions might be some selections from St. Vincent, the new Marianne Faithful, JP Inc and the latest Metric, I might add in the Acid Queen from the Smitehreens' Tommy tribute album, I'm watiting for the Them Crooked Vultures release to come out and for the upcoming Fu Manchu album and I want to check out the new Flaming Lips and see what I think of it.

So far I've got

A Camp - Stronger Than Jesus
PJ Harvey & John Parish - Black Hearted Love
Wilco - You And I
Colin Hay - I Can't Get Up Out of This Bed
Neil Young - Just Singing a Song
Iggy Pop - Nice to be Dead
Masters of Reality - King Richard TH
A Fine Frenzy - Stood Up
Hoffs & Sweet w/ Steve Howe - All Good People
Camera Obscura - You're The Only Star in My Blue Heaven
Pink Mountaintops - While We Were Dreaming

Here's a Challenge: Make a Best of Comp for the Beach Boys solo albums....Rules: You have to use all 3 Wilson brothers solo albums (or unreleased), a couple of songs from Mike, one or two by Bruce/Al....Optional: David Marks material.

Also, since Al has a very small selection, you could reuse some stuff he hasnt released like Lookin Down the Coast or his re-recording of California.

I'll have mine in a bit.

Did you ever start talking to somebody, the topic of music comes up, and you asked the person, "So, what are some of your favorites?" Then, they'll return the favor, and ask you, "And what about you....?" Well, that is the idea behind this comp. If I could give them a single 80 min. CD, this would be it. It might be a lot of fun to see what people come up with. When you examine songs that you NEVER tire of hearing, it might surprise you - and others. Any takers? This is mine - and sequenced, too!

My All-Time Favorite Songs....or, Songs I Never Get Tired Of Hearing - Ever!

1. I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles
2. Fallin' In Love - Spring
3. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
4. This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us - Sparks
5. Perfect Day - Lou Reed
6. Lola - The Kinks
7. Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime - The Korgis
8. Arnold Layne - Pink Floyd
9. S.O.S. - ABBA
10. New York Mining Disaster 1941 - The Bee Gees
11. Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
12. Always On My Mind - Willie Nelson
13. Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
14. Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan
15. The Crystal Ship - The Doors
16. Hero And Heroine - The Strawbs
17. Can't Get It Out Of My Head - ELO
18. Thoughts Of You - Dennis Wilson
19. Dreamboat Annie/Crazy On You - Heart
20. Astronomy - Blue Oyster Cult
21. It Was A Very Good Year - Frank Sinatra

Good one! Chubby did some good things besides "The Twist" and "Let's Twist Again".

There's been countless reissues of Hendrix's later recordings including one that just came out this week, Valleys of Neptune. I find these frustrating because they're usually poorly compiled. They'll be some great tracks and some outright filler. Using the copies of First Rays... and South Saturn Delta I already had plus some tracks I got from Valleys and Hendrix' box set off i-tunes and a download of Voodoo Soup from a blog I came up with this;

1. Bleeding Heart [funky version, South Saturn Delta]
2. Come Down Hard On Me [Jimi Hendrix box set]
3. Look Over Yonder [South Saturn Delta]
4. Room Full of Mirrors [Alan Douglas mix, Voodoo Soup]
5. Straight Ahead [First Rays of the New Rising Sun]
6. Drifting [Alan Douglas mix, Voodoo Soup]
7. Crying Blue Rain [Valleys of Neptune]
8. Ships Passing Through the Night [early version of Night Bird Flying, Valleys of Neptune]
9. Beginnings [First Rays...]
10. Dolly Dagger [First Rays...]
11. Ezy Rider [First Rays...]
12. Message to Love [Jimi Hendrix box set]
13. Astro Man [First Rays...]
14. Peace in Mississippi [Voodoo Soup]
15. Hey Baby [First Rays...]
16.  Angel [First Rays...]
17. In From the Storm [Voodoo Soup]
18. Belly Button Window [First Rays...]

Now this is definitely a thread after my own heart.  I have well over 200 of these things that I've done.  Since it's really late at night, and I should get in bed soon, I'll start with one that features longer pieces, all from the heady early years of the FM rock era (late 60s to early 70s).  It features three songs (indicated by *) that I heard back to back on WKDA-FM in Nashville very late at night when I was a teenager in early 1972, and it was the nearest thing to a great trip that I've ever had (being as I've never done hallucinogins)...

1.  Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago (ZZ Top)
2.  All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
3.  Suzy Q (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
4.  White Room (Cream)
5.  Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin)*
6.  The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys (Traffic)*
7.  Heart Of The Sunrise (Yes)*
8.  A Beautiful Song (Nazz)
9.  Nights In White Satin (Moody Blues)
10.  Love Reign O'er Me (The Who)

Among the many ways I like to put songs together on an 80 minute CD mix is what I like to call "eclectic psychedelia", from several decades and from a diverse range of artists.  Here's one of my favorite mixes of that sort of thing:

1. Your Most Valuable Possession (Ben Folds Five)
2. Saving Grace (Todd Rundgren)
3. All I Wanna Do (Sheryl Crow)
4. Winter's Day (The High Llamas)
5. Shine A Little Love (Electric Light Orchestra)
6. Decatur (Sufjan Stevens)
7. Fixing A Hole (The Beatles)
8. Visionary Road Maps (Stereolab)
9. Life In Technicolor/Cemeteries of London (Coldplay)
10. The Beautiful Letdown (Switchfoot)
11. Killing With Kindness (Tears For Fears)
12. Smile Please (Stevie Wonder)
13. Rainbow Eyes (Brian Wilson)
14. Unforgetful You (Jars Of Clay)
15. Mind Games (John Lennon)
16. Summer Turns To High (R.E.M.)
17. Pony's OG (Akron/Family)
18. When We Was Fab (George Harrison)
19. Dreamachine (Wondermints)
20. Passing By (The Beach Boys)

Since Rhino is likely never going to reissue Yes' Big Generator, not even as a handmade or download release I made my own by using my 2003 Japan HDCD copy, the Yes 35th Anniversary Collection and some stuff I downloaded from the In a Word Ye box set, the 2009 Japan reisssue with bonus tracks and a bootleg of session outtakes.

1. Rhythm of Love (Bill Inglot remix/ remaster from In a Word Yes)
2. Big Generator (2003 Japan HDCD)
3. Shoot High Aim Low (2003 Japan HDCD)
4. Almost Like Love (2003 Japan HDCD)
5. Love Will Find a Way (Bill Inglot remix/ remaster from In a Word Yes)
6. Final Eyes (2003 Japan HDCD)
7. I'm Running (2003 Japan HDCD)
8. Holy Lamb (Bill Inglot remix/ remaster from In a Word Yes)
9. Rhythm of Love Dance to the Rythm 12" Remix (from 2009 Japan cd)
10. Love Will Find a Way Extended 12" Remix (from 2009 Japan cd)
11. Big Generator alternate version issued to radio stations (from 35th Anniversary cd, Bill Inglot remaster)
12. I'm Running Early Version (from album sessions bootleg)
13. Final Eyes Early Version (from album sessions bootleg)

I work in an office which may well have THE worst musical tastes in the history of mankind. Part are into the whole urban/hip hop scene while the others enjoy such delights as Will Young and Robbie Williams. If you don't reside in the UK you would never have heard of those two and for that I envy you. To combat this I fight the good fight by making many CD comps from my ever expanding collection which I then bring to work to convert/piss people off. Here's the last one I made

1) Surfin' Bird - The Trashmen
2) Wild Mountain Thyme - The Byrds
3) Never Going Back Again - Fleetwood Mac
4) Berkley Mews - The Kinks
5) Dark End of the Street - Flying Burrito Brothers
6) Shape I'm In - The Band
7) Girl in the Thunderbolt Suit - T-Rex
Cool Marcella (live) - The Beach Boys
9) Cripple Creek - Scotsville Squirrel Barkers
10) Bagfull of Money - Roger McGuinn
11) Spirit of Amercia - The Beach Boys
12) Don't Talk Now - James Taylor
13) Heard it on the X - ZZ Top
14) Polly - The Kinks
15) Crumbling Land - -Pink Floyd
16) Drugstore Truck Drivin' Man - The Byrds
17) Roll 'um Easy - S.D. Souther
18) Baron Saturday - The Pretty Things
19) Kanas City Southern - Dillard & Clark
20) Good Day in Hell - The Eagles
21) The Knife - Genesis

I should add that all my comps are HATED by the losers I work with!!

DENNY WILSON FANS LOOK AWAY NOW!!

I once brought in Sunflower and when "Got to Know the Woman" came on it was trashed BIG time for about a minute or two then someone pressed the skip button.

I just made an altered version of Genesis' Duke for my Ipod. A bit of revisionist history, the two proto-Emo numbers Please Don't Ask and Alone Again are cut. So is Misunderstanding. In their place are two 1980 b-sides. I also put back together the Duke suite, pretty much as Genesis fan sites claim it's supposed to run except I added Man of Our Times in cause I think it fits well. Now Duke runs like a typical 50 minute Genesis prog album;

Cul De Sac
Evidence of Autumn (1980 b-side)
Open Door (1980 b-side)
Heathhaze
Behind the Lines
Duchess
Guide Vocal
Man of Our Times
Turn it on Again
Duke's Travels
Duke's End

I was very dissapointed in the projected tracklist for the upcoming reissue of Peter Gabriel So. Here's the alternative I came up with:

Tracks 1 - 8: Original running order of vinyl version
9. Don't Break This Rhythm
10. Curtains
11. This is the Picture (Excellent Birds)
12. Big Time (12 Inch Remix)
13. In Your Eyes (12 Minute Live Version with additional verse.)
14. We Do What We're Told (Demo)
