I have a copy of the 2004 Pet Projects CD which collects a number of Brian's productions, including the Laughing Gravy (aka Dean Torrence) cover of "Vegetables". However, on the Amazon.com review page for this disc (at http://www.amazon.com/Pet-Projects-Brian-Wilson-Productions/dp/B000083LRM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1205722432&sr=1-1), it says:

"Dean of Jan and Dean recorded a cover of the Smiley Smile track Vegetables in 1967, with Brian, Marilyn and Diane helping out on vocals, and this came out on the White Whale label credited to Laughing Gravy (the name of Laurel and Hardy's dog in The Chimp). Although this is listed as having been included on the album, the version that actually plays is the 1972 Jan and Dean re-make on United Artists that was on the flipside of Jenny Lee, though it does have Brian Wilson on backing vocals. "

Is this accurate? Is this really the 1972 remake on Pet Projects, and if so, where can I find the original 1967 version by Laughing Gravy?

Thanks.

Dean, Brian, Marilyn & Diane recorded new backing vocals for it in 1971, and that version was released on the "Jan and Dean Anthology" album in early '72.  There's a picture of that session in the David Leaf book.  I don't think Brian or the Rovell sisters are on the original 1967 version, although Brian is credited with coproducing it.

Actually they all were on the original and you can even hear them better.

Yeah, the version of Vegetables on the Pet Projects CD is the 1972 remake. The 1967 recording is available (in the loosest possible sense of the word) on the Japanese "Still I Dream Of You" compilation from 1993.

I don't think so - the photos of the session are definitely from the early 70s.

The original 67 version is on the "In the Garden:  The White Whale Story" CD:

http://www.amazon.com/Garden-White-Whale-Story/dp/B0000DZGVY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1205761763&sr=8-1

The CD is worth getting even besides the Laughing Gravy single.

And on top of that, the dog appears in the 1931 short, Laughing Gravy.

Well they must of all came back in. I have it on the Dean Torrence Music Phase I ep and you can hear the girls at the fade.
