Of course there is footage of the band performing Okie From Muskogee and Heroes And Villains on (I think?) the American Band documentary. And I have also seen footage of them performing Forever and It's About Time on YouTube. So does anyone have any details about this concert such as an exact date and in particular the set list? Is there any possibility of this being released eventually? That would be really cool. Like we have The Lost Concert (1964) and Knebworth (1980) as complete concerts on DVD. But it would be cool to have an early 70's concert like this on DVD which was when, in my opinion, they were at their 'freshest' in terms of live presentation and performance.

On the bootleg zone sight somebody lists the whole concert special (with other artists not a whole Beach Boys set) as circulating but I have never seen it. It has one more song (Good Vibrations) then the boot copies now floating around.

It's from the NBC TV special "Good Vibrations from Central Park". Schaefer Music Festival, July 2, 1971.
A year later, on June 3, 1972, they did another NBC special "Good Vibrations from London". Clips can be found on YouTube, "Help Me, Rhonda" with Elton John f.e.

Very funny.... Roll Eyes

I meant that the footage is uninterupted unlike things like the Good Vibrations Tour. I know it's not complete as such but it's still exclusively concert footage and not interupted with interview snippets or kids on skateboards or some guy on a plane etc..

And even if they were complete (meaning every song included) I'm sure it wouldnt be 100% complete anyway. Eg: they would have to cut out sections where nothing happens for a few minutes or something.

I don't think editing can save the Knebworth version of "In My Room" though.  Grin

So does anyone have any details about this concert such as an exact date and in particular the set list?

Date of show was June 2nd, TV broadcast was 19th August. Eric doesn't have a setlist, unfortunately.

I'm hoping someone may know, besides Mike Kowalski, the identities of the back-up band? I've tried searching the internet in vain.

Ah, yes. Thanks Jon! Can I pick your brains for any others, for instance, the bass player?

Bassist is Luther Coffee.  Horn section includes Joel Peskin.  And Darly Dragon is there on piano/organ.  FYI, the show starts with some backstage footage (including Dennis with his bandaged hand) set to the group's live performance of "Good Vibrations", but they aren't seen performing that song.  Another FYI, Brad Elliott says in his book that this show was aired on ABC, and the following year's "Good Vibes From London" was on NBC.

Also-show was July 2, not June 2, 1971- hence after Dennis's June 1971 hand accident-necessitating Kowalski on drums.  The question I should have asked Alan Boyd for my article..maybe there is unedited BB footage in the vaults?

i am listening to my tape i made of this show from tv to cassette. the 1971 show was aired on abc....one can hear the voice over at the start of the show saying abc. small part of gv was aired also at the end of the show with the group shown...esp as the next program following the concerts  called "heroes and heroin" was being announced and i think tv guide even had gv listed as being done.. then i caught an ad for the lp surf's up i taped from an am station wls or wcfl, can't remember which, out of chicago. use to listen to both late night when i could pick them up on am radio. they played the heck out of "don't go near the water". man...wish i could relieve those days...
here is a little part with gv at the closing credits and the surf's up ad for anyone interested...using an equalizer will made it sound much better.

Horn section also included Sal Marquez, who left around the same time as Desper to join Frank Zappa!
Backstage audience included George Harrison & Art Garfunkle, seen briefly talking in the wings during the show.
I have many memories from that day, but I'll have to share more later...
