I'm not sure if you guys have seen this, but I just stumbled across this on youtube tonight.  Its silent footage of a 1963 show featuring both Al and David Marks on stage... evidently this is one of those early shows where Brian was not present.  Any ideas on who the female singer might be?  Interesting stuff!!

That's pretty cool stuff!  Not sure who the female singer is...could it be Ginger Blake?  It's too blurry to tell.

Some of this was in American band, right?

If that from 63 then why do I see a copy of the Hard Day's Night soundtrack?  Cheesy

My thoughts exactly.  I guess maybe the "in the house" footage at the end of the film was shot months after the concert?  I wonder if that's Murry's living room.   Grin

These are David's home movies taken over a period around '63 - '64 - beginning with the Beach Boys and ending with the Marksmen.  The records and rig are his...laid out in his parent's living room.  David's father, Elmer Marks, was the band's first road manager for their shows outside of California and he shot the footage from Hawaii.

I forgot to add how cool I think it is to see footage available on YouTube of David and Al on stage together in 1963, 1995, 1997 and 2007.  For two guys often portrayed as each other's replacements, there seems to be a decent amount of video of them ontstage together.

Wow, thanks for the info!  I'm really glad I found this footage last night, as I had no idea it even existed.

This has me wondering what a 1963 gig with David and Al minus Brian would have sounded like. If only silent films weren't silent.   Grin

Mrs. Marks, thank you for sharing that info with us. And may I say I find it very positive to hear from you you're actually happy to see that footage on YouTube, a media that lately has had a lot of criticism because of copyright-issues. I would very well understand if you (and/or David) weren't happy with personal material like this floating around publically.

Btw, I read about footage of David and Al together live with the BB in "The Lost Beach Boy" (I'm not much of a reader, but I finished that book in a week!). And I admit I hadn't expect these to be circulating. Makes me curious how that happened...or are these specific recordings made by someone else and different from what's mentioned in the book?

Cool!  1995?  I think that's the only one I haven't seen.  Does anyone have a link to that?

Smile-Holland,

Well, don’t put me in with the “cool with copyright infringement” crowd just yet…its actually something I take VERY seriously, both as a Libra who hates to sit back and witness something that isn’t ‘right’ AND as someone who’s family has felt the financial affects of the shift from a culture that pays for music to one that feels entitled to steal it.

I figure since the video is out there anyway, I’d rather everyone be able to see it on YouTube from a link from David’s website than have some random person making a profit off selling illegal copies.  I try to avoid getting riled up if possible and since I was planning on uploading the footage anyway, I will focus on the positive -  that this person saved me some time, rather than the fact they had no right to take a copy of someone’s home movies and make them public. So, I’m going to restrain myself from going into lecture-mode on how bad stealing intellectual property is…but maybe in another thread if someone wants to start one.

To get to your questions:  Yes, this is the same video that is mentioned in the book.  In the foreword, Darian talks about hearing the Marksmen for the first time set as backgrounds to these videos and I think Jon mentions them, too.   David sold the reels to the same guy who is currently auctioning off his Pendelton as being Brian’s on Ebay for $55,000.  Bootleg copies have been floating around for about 20 years....its not that rare among collectors.

Eric,

The Baywatch footage is from 1995.

And you're completely right on that. In that case it's even more admirable that you accept the situation as it is and can turn it to a positive thing. I do hope that it will help ending some myths on the Al replaces David story. And I also hope one day this footage gets the proper official release it deserves...I'll be the first to order it!!

How can you let someone commit such horrible fraud like that? You should report him to eBay.

Eric,

Oh!  OK, thanks...I saw that when it first aired.  I forgot that both Dave and Al were present.

The heading is deceptive but the fine print in the listing is accurate so there's nothing I can really do about it.  No one shirt belonged to one guy...they each had one but didn't keep track of which one was theirs by putting names on them or anything like that. The seller is claiming there is evidence of Brian and Mike wearing this particular Pendelton based on plaid patterns in photos.  Even if you can ignore the fact it was David's shirt that he had hanging in a closet for 25 years until he sold it to this guy, where it starts getting sleazy is...if Brian and Mike each wore it once, why is it Brian's and not Mike's.

However, I think anyone willing to drop that kinda cash on memorabilia is going to read the entire listing so I don't think they'll be surprised when their certificate of authenticity is an old album cover and proof it belonged to David Marks.

A collector's item, certainly...but will it fetch 55,000 clams?  I doubt it...

Anyone notice that Mike's stage routine is about the same.  I bet he uses the same jokes! Grin

I can tell you that the real crime here is the fact that the owner of the film chose to have it transfered to video by an amatuer. I've transferred over a million feet of 8mm, super 8 and 16mm film over the last 25 years and I don't mind saying that this You Tube Beach Boys footage is completely shoddy and obviously done by a novice or someone in their kitchen. For shame.

And the rest of you better get hip. The same people who are orchestrating what Carrie refers to as 'the shift from a culture that pays for music to one that feels entitled to steal it.'..you can bet it's the same 'social justice' people that are rapidly shifting our culture from producers to consumers - from givers to takers.
