He was a proud man and a frustrated songwriter who enjoyed little commercial success, why did he pass on a chance of having his name in the charts?

Maybe he was afraid that it would bomb?  It didn't really sell all that well, compared to other Beach Boys singles.  Or maybe he didn't want to get full credit if it was a hit.

Idle speculation: it might not have been "cool" to have the old man writing with the young guys.

Way back then 40 some years ago, before the web, blogs, celebrity TV news shows, etc LOTS of things were hidden or glossed over for commercial considerations. Think of how many actors and performers changed their names to hide their ethnic roots and other things. The world is so much more open now, it's almost unbelievable.

Another question: does anyone know why he chose the name Reggie Dunbar?

Brian received the copyright as the only writer, I guess Murry just wanted to help the boys. He also founded a publishing company with Brian around that time. And then he sold Sea Of Tunes...

Maybe he chose "Reggie Dunbar" to channel "Reggie Dwight", another name changer for that time frame?
