TLOS Speculation

Lets start a thread on the speculation on each song of the album, such as discussing what riffs from other songs or if the song was re-incarnated from another tune.

OK - "California Role" started life in summer 1985 as "Wondering What You're Up To Now".

and then there's I'm Goin' Home....which remembers me of demotrack I heard (80-ies or early 90-ies) called Goin' Home. Has quite some similarities.
+ that there was something else in that particular song AGD mentioned in the TLOS review-thread.

Surprise for me was the inclusion of a few bars from a 1976 archive track that very, very few have ever heard.

In "
Morning Beat
" you can hear a small part that seems to have been directly lifted from a yet-unreleased song called "
Walkin'
".

the music playing under "Narrative of Venice Beach" is very similar to the oboe solo on Wondermints' "Another Way"

Can't Wait Too Long is made into the transition between Oxygen to the Brain and Midnight's Another Day.

Very good call on the Morning Beat/Walkin'. I knew it sounded very familiar. Now I miss Brian's vocals about an old lady with an electric car. Another good call on the Wondermint's oboe solo. Same notes.
TLOS, as good as it is, almost seems like a vehicle for a lot of Brian's best 70's leftovers...as GIOMH was for his 80's....only TLOS is good.
Kidding. I appreciate GIOMH to an extent...unlike a certain AGD. heh.

Morning Beat seems to be based on Walkin' and has a snippet of Rio Grande in it...Good Kind Of Love has a fragment of Brian's Back and the descending H&V/Goin' On line...the opening chords to Oxgen are almost identical to Love and Mercy

morning beat has that shortenin' bread feel to it.
I want to say that in Good Kind of Love, the "little lovin and a kissin and a huggin" is part from Maxwell's silver Hammer on Abbey Road, but then again, it's prolly just a desending scale.
Midnight's Another Day reminds me of Til I die so much, it's wierd.

The verse melody here borrows a bit from "Frankie & Johnny", especially the Elvis Presley version.

this isn't a speculation, but just an observation; i enjoy that brian sings and accepts his past problems, such as the accapella part in I'm Goin' Home ("at 25 i turn out the lights....") and part of Oxygen to the Brain ("i wasted a lot of years...")
it's not as awkward or cliche as per say: happy days (Imagination) or Thank You (Sweet Insanity)

where's part of rio grande?
The 'hear those guitars gently strumming' bit replicates the 'oh the great big river' chords from around the 2 minute and 7:30 marks of Rio Grande.
Plus I forgot earlier that the start of Good Kind of Love really reminds me of the verse of WIRWFC - just the feel, the similar chords and the freeform style of piano playing.

Regardless of the sources of these melodies, it adds up to a satisfactory whole which is no bad thing, considering a lot of the original versions of these songs are unfinished or are likely to remain unreleased.
As someone pointed out, a bit like GIOMH, but perhaps more cohesive.

Oh for sure - the whole decidedly exceeds the sum of the parts.
And it's nothing like
GIOMH
- one, it's good, and two, Brian was interested.
