Hello.  I am YR2004 from the old forums.  Sorry for not dropping by in a while, I've been busy here at college.  I'm currently working on a stereo mix of Good Vibrations, but have run into a dead end.  I seem to remember somewhere there exists a stereo track of the piano/jew's harp bridge that occurs after the second chorus around 1:45 in the song, but I can't find one.  Does anyone know if one exists?

Thanks,
Mark

SOT 15 might have something like that. Check there.

I checked SOT15, Heroes and Vibrations, the Archaeology, the Box Set, Hawthorne and maybe something else, and I didn't find anything.  I might have missed something, however.  It's not exactly reliable to search for a 30 second fragment in a 3 hour box set in 10 minutes.

Maybe said track isn't booted?

Definitely a possibility, and it would force me to include that section in rather uninspired stereo (perhaps track panned 20% left, vocals 20% right).  Just trying to tap the well of vast knoweledge that is the Smiley Smile message board.

I seem to remember running in to this same problem when constructing a stereo backing track of my own.  There are a few sections that you just have to take what you get, and I think that's one of them.

In case anyone's interested, I currently have a very rough version uploaded at my webspace.  I wouldn't want to start any trouble with legality issues, so anyone interested can PM me or contact me via AIM and I'll provide the link.

Try SOT 15 Disc 2 Track 13, at about 0:30.

Not perfect, the piano is rather low, but the "jew's harp" is very clear. One of my favorite GV stereo sections.

Awesome!!

Thank you so much.
Hopefully I'll get a better version up tonight.

This means that everything except the organ/double bass part is in stereo...No one would have a source for that, would they?

That's actually the section I was thinking of.

I think there was a stereo "take" of that somewhere that was not used on the final recording, but you probably don't want to do that, (nor should you IMO).  Just comb filter it or something.

What part do you mean? I found that all of it is available in stereo except for the penultimate part where you hear just the theremin and cello's together.

The part in which the "Hum-de-dums" go over when included.  String bass, harmonica plays the "Gotta keep those loving good" theme...

That's in stereo as released somewhere?

I mean to say, is this part we're discussing the actual recording that ended up being released as part of the Good Vibrations single?  Like I alluded to earlier, mistakenly about the wrong segment, I thought this section had a take that was in stereo,  but the actual take that Brian used was for some reason in mono (or very, very narrow stereo) on the SOT.

Well, yeah "New take 6" on disc 3 is the released take, in stereo.  But, It's barely stereo...sounds to me like organ, bass, harmonica dead center, percussion panned 10 % right.

But, it is stereo.

It sounds to me like the percussion and harmonica are closer to 40% right, which is enough.  The organ and the bass are dead center though.  I'll see I can expand the field a bit.

You're sure take 6 is the released take?

Just wanting to be absolutely sure I'm using all the right material.

Thanks.

I'm actually pretty sure it's take 8, which is a problem, because take 8 isn't in stereo.  So i have a dilemma on my hands...

Fantastic Mark. Those vocals sound smooth and perfect. Can hardly hear any digital artifacts from the isolation process.
The bass is maybe a little deep. But excellent stuff.

Very nice! Impressive work. What did you do for the part at the end where you have just the cellos and theremin?

A similar process to the isolation of the vocals.  Used the panning on the box set to isolate both, then ran precise FFT filters for the theremin.
