Okay, despite containing a few non-standard BB comp tracks, 'The Warmth of the Sun' features pretty much the usual suspects: Sail On Sailor, 'Til I Die, etc. These were all on SOS. And some of the less conventional tracks that have been included, well, they're hardly crying out to be heard are they? 'Don't Go Near The Water'? I mean really... So come on, a truely different BB comp album, that'd really draw attention to some lost gems. Let's say no more than 24 tracks.. (and nothing from Pet Sounds, this is about highlighting songs people haven't heard!) I personally think the following would be one hell of an album:
1. LONELY SEA 2. NOBLE SURFER 3. IN THE PARKIN' LOT 4. NO-GO SHOWBOAT 5. SHE KNOWS ME TOO WELL 6. THE GIRL FROM NEW YORK CITY 7. GIRL DON'T TELL ME 8. THE LITTLER GIRL I ONCE KNEW 9. CABINESSENCE 10. SHE'S GOIN' BALD 11. COUNTRY AIR 12. HERE COMES THE NIGHT 13. CELEBRATE THE NEWS 14. BE HERE IN THE MORNIN' 15. ALL I WANNA DO 16. SLIP ON THROUGH 17. LONG PROMISED ROAD 18. LADY 19. ALL THIS IS THAT 20. TRADER 21. THE NIGHT WAS SO YOUNG 22. MY DIANE 23. BABY BLUE 24. HOLY EVENING

I have to ask this - have you actually listened, even once, to a  CD called Sounds Of Summer ? Or just looked at the track listing ? Neither of those two songs is on it. Because they weren't Top 40 hits.

It's not that your point isn't valid but do you have some sorta of SOS conterfit with those songs.

Aah, i was thinking of the 3 CD 'Best Of..' they did. See? There titles are so goshdarn cliched these days u can't tell 'em apart! Yeh, SOS didn't have them tracks on it - though i do seem to recall it had such masterpieces as 'Come Go With Me'. My point is still valid, yes?

The remit for SOS - the single disc US version - was simple: for inclusion, a song had to be a US Top 40 hit. "Come Go..." made #18.  Cool

Ok ok. Jesus.. But wouldn't it be nice for them to release something DIFFERENT for a change is what 'm getting at? The B Boys have a back catalogue that is full of tremendous, intelligent, experimental music - but they just churn out the same well-known tracks over and over.. Not that said tracks aren't great, but how great would it be to see a comp CD with 'Little Bird' or 'Trader' on it?

Ok, point taken. But please, how great would it be to see 'My Solution', 'Mona Kanua' or 'Telephone Backgrounds..'? Stick a few on for the die-hards for once.. Does anyone else just not give a toss about hearing a live version or mono/stereo/remixed version of an already well-known BB track, and would just much rather hear something unheard from the vaults? Christ, there's enough of the stuff.. And it'd sell!! They could realise a whole box-set of these kinda rarities!!

I dunno, some of those things might be a bit too uncommercial, unless it was a "sold-to-the-diehards" thing like Hawthorne.

I sketched out a compilation for the early years that'd fit on two discs at 78 minutes; I just don't understand myself why they just don't delete these useless compilations and just do a decent overview:

"Disc One

Surfin'
Surfin' Safari
409
Surfin' USA
Shut Down
Surfer Girl
Little Deuce Coupe
Catch A Wave
In My Room
Be True To Your School [45]
Little Saint Nick [45]
The Warmth Of The Sun
Fun, Fun, Fun
Don't Worry Baby
I Get Around
Little Honda
Wendy
All Summer Long
When I Grow Up [To Be A Man]
Dance, Dance, Dance
Please Let Me Wonder
Kiss Me, Baby
Do You Wanna Dance?
Help Me, Rhonda
Let Him Run Wild
California Girls
Then I Kissed Her
You're So Good To Me
Girl Don't Tell Me
The Little Girl I Once Knew
Barbara-Ann [45 edit]
Sloop John B.
Caroline, No

Disc Two:

Wouldn't It Be Nice
You Still Believe In Me
God Only Knows
Here Today
Good Vibrations
Wonderful [Smile]
Cabinessence
Surf's Up
Heroes And Villains
Country Air
Wild Honey
Darlin'
Here Comes The Night
Let The Wind Blow
Little Bird
Meant For You
Friends
Wake The World
Busy Doin' Nothin'
Bluebirds Over The Moutain
Time To Get Alone
Do It Again
I Can Hear Music
Forever
All I Wanna Do
Break Away
Slip On Through
Cotton Fields
Tears In The Morning
This Whole World

Surely that would encompass the high points of the 1961-1969 era - sure there could be few substitutions, but that's the best mix, in my opinion of "art" versus "hits"."

Yeh, nice selection! Lose 'Be True to Your School' and 'Bluebirds..' though. No 'Lady'? Sorry, it's my all-time favourite..  But would fit nicely, no?

I doubt it would fit in a collection from 1961-1969, as it was recorded in 1970...

Well, I certainly don't mean to speak for all other fans, but my feeling is that the consensus among BB fans is that we don't want any more compilations, whether they are compilations of hits, or compilations of lesser-known tracks. If it's already been released, I don't need to buy it again. We already have the "Good Vibrations" 5-CD boxed set, Greatest Hits Vol. 1, 2, and 3, "Classics Selected by Brian Wilson", "Sounds of Summer", and "Warmth of the Sun." And that's just the mainstream stuff that's been issued since 1993. Sure, if they have to release yet another compilation, I'd love for them to pick out some stuff deserving of being introduced to a new audience. But if they issue another compilation and leave off stuff that's already on "Sounds of Summer" and "Warmth of the Sun", just about anything else they include will be unknown to the masses.

What I think most fans would love to see is another compilation of previously unreleased material. It's fun to make up tracklistings for future hits compilations or other compilations of previously issued material, but I think the fans are getting pretty tired of the that, and of course have been for quite some time. I keep hearing how good sales of a compilation will help fund and get the record company interested in archival releases, but I've seen little evidence of this actually happening. Since 1999, they have relaunched GH Vol. 1 and released GH Vol. 2 and 3, issued "SOS" and "WOTS", and during the time, we've had one archival release, "Hawthorne, CA" (and of course the Hallmark CD). I'd like to see the trend change, but it doesn't seem to change a whole lot. "Sounds of Summer" sells very well, because it was marketed well and is full of all the major hits. "WOTS" sells pretty well, much less than "SOS", as it has also been marketed well but has fewer of the well-known hits. Archival releases like "Endless Harmony Soundtrack" and "Hawthorne, CA" don't sell as well. So I don't see how Capitol/EMI is ever going to be interested in releasing a lot of archival releases. I can see Capitol being persuaded to another 1 or 2-CD compilation like the "EH Soundtrack" or "Hawthorne", but hopefully the "Beach Boys Central" website will get the green light one of these days and we can get even more substantial material.

hey thomasogg...
i hear what you're saying.  you'd think the respective record companies would wake up (just once maybe) and put out a whole album's worth of material, vastly different in content instead of churning out the same songs each time, only repackaged.

Well put, HeyJude. Although, I've gotta say, I personally feel that these two are the best compilations put out, and together they give a good portrayal of the Beach Boys for the newbie...although I wish "It's About Time" was on there!

I guess I have to say that comps mean little to me at all. Good to get new fans sure, but I could care less about them anymore.

Ditto. I don't even buy BBs releases unless there are songs I don't have. Stereo remixes are cool enough, but not that big a deal to me.

8. THE LITTLER GIRL I ONCE KNEW
If you mean The Little Girl I Once Knew, that was on Warmth of the Sun.

If you don't, then that track doesn't exist.
