You know, I listened to "Battle Hymn" finally...

That doesn't actually live up to its bad reputation.  Quite a fun listen, actually.  Mike fumbles it a little bit, but it's certainly not as godawful as most people have said!

I think it's hilarious, a funnier musical joke than Smart Girls, even.

I like it too. It is really funny and I love that weird organ part (Brian?) and the banjo too. Is that Brian singing the hi on "glory gloy hallelujah"? It sounds kind of like a record for kindergardeners.

The only one I can really pick out on the chorus is Al.

a turd with sleigh-bells is still a turd.

Out of the still wonderful unreleased BB's stuff out there, it makes no sense trying to big up Battle Hymn, if only the Caribou fire had got hold of that  particular tape.

This thread is showing the appreciation of the song. We've heard all you goobers talk about how much you hate it enough already. So why can't you just NOT spill your hatred for the song in the one positive thread that exists?

I like it too. It's dumb as hell, but enjoyable.

Of course there is heaps of unreleased stuff out there that is better than this song, and I think most people acknowledge that. There is tonnes of stuff that I would love to see released over this but this would be better than nothing.

What is a goober?, should i be offended.
But we do agree on something then, this is the one positive thread that exists about this song Grin

A goober's a peanut.  No reason to be offended.
Now if the "g" and the "b" were reversed...THAT might be offensive.

OK, I have now listened to it 8 times...

I like it, other than the Mike vocal...

Sounds like "Child of Winter" meets "Everybody Wants to Live" meets "Cotton Fields" meets ...

Sounds like funny joke meets Beach Boys to me. From that perspective, it's harmless and enjoyable.

Agreed.  Just visualizing Mike trying to sing it that fast will put a smile on your face

"As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free". I can just see the irritation in Mike's eyes, and I can see Brian laughing his ass off.  Grin

It's no more cringe-worthy than a good number of 76-77 Brian productions, released and unreleased. Now, if Brian meant it as a joke... We'll never know.

Told this tale before, but it's a good one - the compilers of Endless Harmony were trawling the archives and unearthed the master for "Battle Hymn...", whereupon they excitedly phoned Alan and told him they were going to include it on said comp. The ensuing conversation, as reported to me, went like this:

ACJ - "Are you sure ?"

"Yeah, why not ?"

"Have you actually listened to it ?"

"Um... no - why ?"

"(30-odd seconds of silence) Weeelllll....."

The tape was duly auditioned... and dropped from consideration.
