They are the perpetrators of the crimes they committed and, if they are Syrian refugees, the victims of the circumstances there. But that wasn't my point. My point is that, en masse, they are no different from other impoverished crowds of refugees through history.
Pretending that circumstance doesn't affect peoples' behavior isn't very useful.
