The legendary Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys was enlisted to help launch "The Definitive 200" -- a selection of the record buying publics all time favorite albums. The event staged at Capitol Records' Studio A, where Wilson recorded many of his hits, is sure to give rise to some heated debate.
The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' topped this list of all time favorites. It was an adjudication by a panel from the National Association of Recording Merchandisers. And all genres were up for consideration.
Jim Donio, president of National Association of Recording Merchandisers, said, "So, why a 'Definitive 200'? Actually, the idea was first suggested by Jim Urie, who is the president of Universal Music Group Distribution, to give the industry a chance to highlight music that consumers have shown are among their favourite recordings over time." The Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds' came in at number nine.
Original Beach Boys Wilson and Jardine, accompanied by a backup band, performed four of their classics, including 'God Only Knows' and 'Good Vibrations'.
Among the best-selling artists who didn't make the 200 were The Carpenters, ABBA, INXS and Garth Brooks, whose 'Double Live' is among the 10 top-selling albums of all time. But then perhaps we should be grateful for such small mercies.
