"I vote we make this thread act as the BW.com site's board. If you want to whine that you're mistreated, threaten to leave altogether, return, threaten to leave again, praise BW with no regard for reality, bash ML with no regard for reality, and occasionally put up some kind of stupid trivia question, this is the thread to do it in."

aside from the actually informative threads (desper, vosse, inside pop, and boyd), isn't that this board also?   :D

Right from the Blueboard (aimed at Mr. Desper):

"Anyone off the street could've come in and helped the Beach Boys record Sunflower and Surf's Up, but through some incredible, cosmic piece of good luck, you were plucked from obscurity."

Anyone off the street could have engineered "Sunflower" and "Surf's Up"?!?!?!? Why is there no "shaking head in disbelief"-smiley when you need one?

I just looked over the website just to see.  Someone hose me down and pour Lysol on me.

What dreck.

"You can't expect every BB fan to know who Stephen Desper is, you elitest know-it-all!"  Or something like that.

Let's see -- you spend how much time online writing about your passion for music, you ask questions directly to Mark Linett, throw Chuck Britz' name around, but don't know Desper.  Hmm.

I think that most fans' knowledge of BB history is straight from the liner notes.  David Leaf talks about Britz and Mark's name is on everything.  Because Desper's period was during the Brother Years primarily, and Leaf only glances over his name once in 20/20, most fans don't register his name.  But I tell you -- ANYONE who listens to music from 1968-1972, hears Sunflower and doesn't have a dropped jaw over the sound just doesn't hear it.  I wanted to know who Desper was the first time I played that album in 1991.  Amazing work.

So fine, Blueboard, talk about your small talk all day long.  Scholarly discussions will remain over here and the Smile Shop.  We can have fun here too, but there simply must be a place for more in-depth talk, and the Blueboard isn't it.  The atmosphere is so non conducive when Desper gets dismissed so easily.

Wow.  Somehow, I don't think I could have walked in there and helped the Beach Boys record Sunflower and Surf's Up.   But that's just me.

As someone plucked from obscurity, I can attest that Stephen Desper was not plucked from obscurity.

They're mad at Andrew too. Stealing valuable information from this very topic to use against him:

I'm the Michael Newman who posted that, my point was I thought Mr.Doe was being unfair by lumping all Blue Boarders in one boat.  Especially since he posts enough there, some would considered him one also.  It's funny you quote one idiot who doesn't seem to know who Steven Desper is or his importance, and then lump all the Blue Boarders as know nothing Brainistas.  What wasn't discussed here was how the unenlightened Blue Boarders rebuked this guy for the rest of the thread.  It must be great to feel so superior to the rest of us, I think actually it's rather juvenile.

No one said anything about superior.  I just don't like the style of the Blue Board.  Read this whole thread to see why -- the level of dialogue is typically at that level of gushy fandom that won't accept any type of critique of Brian Wilson's work.  God forbid someone not like something that Brian did.  This type of attack is just the icing on the cake.  Once I can post a legit critique or gripe about, say, GIOMH on the Blueboard and not get a "you're mean!" response, then I will retract what I am saying.

Put it this way -- every message posted there is done with the knowledge that Brian himself may reply.  That in itself hinders good discussion, I think.

I use to post on the "blue board" all the time, but it got so weird there. Trolls did drive-by postings, thread topics just got so out there.  I got tired of seeing topics posted over and over and over. Not to mention the topics that felt like the posters were psychotic. There are a few people there that have maintained a level of sanity.

One time I posted a rather less-than-glowing review on the blueboard and received a death threat. Lovely people, them blueboarders. They need some overdoses of Prozac.

Interesting thread. I know why all the bile. But just to remind people that perhaps www.brianwilson.com might be the first message board Brian Wilson may come across. The message board does suffer from its format. It does make people look overemotional and it is difficult to keep a them going because all the messages disappear after 3 days. So if you are a new comer and dont check the site regularly it makes it quite difficult to follow what is going on, as a result of whch difficult to integrate. The shenanigans that go on there are no more childish than on any other board, it just looks that way because its less hidden. Hence the Desper thing at the moment.

When I post on the Blueboard I certainly watch my words more than I used to, but this is also inevitable because there is only so much you can talk about Brian Wilson at the personal level and there are no sections where you can talk about anything else. I once talked about "Nebraska" as in Bruce Springsteen, only to be told he was from New Jersey, lol, and was told off many times for talking about bands like The Ramones, and Weezer, which have nothing to do with Brian Wilson of course Wink But hey, what the heck, its ONLY a message board and I met some really really cool people through the Blueboard, including people who post or have posted on this message board too.
