Yesterday I bought the 2002 Criterion collection of the Monterey Pop DVDs, which contains the DA Pennebaker movie "Monterey Pop," "Jimi Plays Monterey," "Shake! Otis at Monterey" and a disc of outtake performances that make up the bulk of what didn't make the aforementioned. Does anyone else have this or have thoughts about it?

I was familiar with the Jimi stuff, as I had that cassette back in the 80s when it came out. And I've seen and heard other bits and pieces here and there. But while I've not been in the mood for a lot of the music on there, all of a sudden yesterday I had a hankering for some live Who, S&G, Jimi, etc.

By the way, there is a Pennebaker/Lou Adler convo from 2001 in which they mention Brian Wilson a few times. Adler notes that he lived in the neighborhood with Brian, and Pennebaker asks whether they didn't borrow Brian's studio equipment. (Adler says no, the 8-track unit was Wally Heider's.)

What groups are perfoming on the outtake disc?  Any Electric Flag?

I've always loved Janis' performance of "Ball and Chain" at Monterey.

Yep: "Drinkin' Wine." The disc also includes Simon & Garfunkel, Laura Nyro, Byrds, Butterfield Blues Band, Mamas & Papas, Association...many others.

I bought it back when it first came out. I had already seen a bit of the 'unreleased' footage, but what I hadn't already seen was worth buying the set for. It's a good investment. Speaking of the DVD set, it's been a while since I watched it. I need to dig it out and refresh my memory.

Since Wine, Wine, Wine by the Electric Flag is out on CD and (now) DVD wouldn't the rest of their set at Monterey exist on audio and video?  While shortlived this was an absolutely great live band.  To my knowledge this is the only live song availible anywhere by them and it would be nice to have a full set to listen to.  Who owns the Monterey tapes?
