Compiled By The Beach Boys, New Compilation's 28 Tracks Complement 2004's
Double Platinum The Very Best Of The Beach Boys: Sounds Of Summer

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beach Boys and
Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing are proud to announce the May 15
release of "The Warmth Of The Sun," a new collection of 28 career-spanning
tracks, hand-selected and sequenced by The Beach Boys themselves. "The
Warmth Of The Sun" traces the iconic band's creative arc in a sunup to
sundown musical journey that goes beyond the beach, presenting a broad view
of the rich musical legacy of America's band.
    (Album cover art: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070307/LAW010 )
The perfect complement and companion to 2004's double-platinum
certified "Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys," this new
collection delves deeper into The Beach Boys' musical legacy with hits like
"Sail On, Sailor" "The Little Girl I Once Knew" and "Feel Flows." Within
"The Warmth Of The Sun's" three decade-spanning tracklist, much of The
Beach Boys' most accomplished work is illuminated. Compiled and sequenced
by The Beach Boys' Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson,
"The Warmth Of The Sun" showcases the broad scope of the Rock and Roll Hall
of Famers' recorded canon.
From the beauty and depth of the title track to the melody and groove
of "Break Away," the journey moves from the surf to the streets, each story
narrated with The Beach Boys' unparalleled trademark harmonies. With its
full spectrum of themes and ambiance, "The Warmth Of The Sun" is a
must-have collection for any fan of The Beach Boys' musical mythos.
For four decades, The Beach Boys, originally comprised of the three
Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and
Hawthorne, California neighbor Al Jardine, have recorded and performed the
music that has become the world's favorite soundtrack to summer. In 1965,
Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and winners of NARAS'
Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, The Beach Boys are an American
institution that is iconic around the world.
In 1961, The Beach Boys began singing about America's newest craze,
surfing. What followed was a wave of hits that vividly expressed the
lifestyles, dreams and ambitions of America's youth. Their signature sound,
full of sun-drenched harmonies, golden melodies and descriptive lyrics,
delivered a taste of the free and easy California lifestyle to listeners
around the world. The music of The Beach Boys brings optimism and a beam of
Southern California sun wherever it is played.
Last fall, Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing celebrated the 40th
anniversaries of The Beach Boys' legendary 1966 album Pet Sounds and the
band's #1 smash hit single "Good Vibrations" with commemorative CD, deluxe
CD/DVD and limited edition vinyl packages.
More than 100 domestic and international publications and journalists
have selected Pet Sounds as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. In
1995, MOJO magazine assembled a panel of leading musicians, songwriters and
producers and named "Pet Sounds" "The Greatest Album Ever Made," and in
1997, the U.K. music magazine voted "Good Vibrations" "The Greatest Single
of All Time." "Pet Sounds" was ranked second on Rolling Stone magazine's
"500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list (2003), right behind The Beatles'
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Rolling Stone has also awarded Pet
Sounds its highest five-star "Classic" rating, and in 2004, the magazine
rated "Good Vibrations" sixth in its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All
Time." The song has also been inducted into NARAS' Grammy Hall of Fame.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH will celebrate The
Beach Boys' enduring legacy this year with "Catch a Wave: The Beach Boys,
the Early Years," a new exhibit scheduled to run from June 22 to December
31, 2007. More than any other artistic entity, The Beach Boys created an
iconic vision of California as the Promised Land for those who would revel
in youth, surf, sand, and rock and roll. This exhibit explores their
formative years through never-before seen artifacts and tells the story of
the band's enduring legacy.

Good selection (outside of missing Caroline No), but wish it was in order and on vinyl.

I'm kind of surprised, but very pleased, with the inclusion of "Feel Flows".  I, too, am surprised by the non-inclusion of "Caroline, No" and "Shut Down".

I would guess that the inclusion of "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" is Mike Love's idea, as his band performs it all the time.

I'm surprised that a full half of the "Surf's Up" was chosen, but I'm even more surprised that "Don't Go Near The Water" was chosen over "Long Promised Road".  I wonder what inspired this choice...I think a more appropriate song from that era would have been "Cottonfields".

What a terrible compilation! Why do they let artists present their own work??!!?

It's OK? Disney Girls (1957)? Why Do Fools Fall In Love? Don't Go Near The Water? California Saga (On My Way To Sunny Californ-i-a)? California Dreamin'?

Terrible choice when there's so much other good stuff, and awful sequencing.

What a greedy bunch of f*ckers they are at Capitol. Ther have been more compliations than albums were originally released. 'Career-spanning' - hardly...

'Complement 2004's Double Platinum The Very Best Of The Beach Boys: Sounds Of Summer'...  (in other words this compo is just an advert for an ealier compo...)

Cool, Cool Water followed by Don't Go Near The Water...

God I hate this sort of thing.

Grr...

Yay, another compilation album. Thrills.

A few really good (and surprising) selections...some not so surprising....overall, a good compilation.

I'm happy 'Forever' made it.  Grin

Not so happy about 'Don't go Near the Water' and 'California Dreamin'...but hey, it's all a matter of personal preference. Whatever. But seriously, how many compilations do they need to release?  More rarities, less compilations. I'm pretty sure that won't happen, but it sure would be nice.

I don't want to jump the gun if there is such a gun to be jumped, but Jasper isn't too far off from being in the ballpark in terms of his stereo guesses.

Obviously it isn't perfect, but I think it's a pretty good compilation for people who only know the hits and want to look a little further.

And it's a good thing that more casual fans will get to know songs like "Forever", "Surf's Up" and "Til I Die".

I think it's very good except for the cover and "Why do fools fall in love", they could and should've put "Caroline no" instead of it. I like the water songs and "Don't go near the water" may very well be quite relevant these times. I think overall it is a great collection.

It's nice to see Brian and Al are still together making music btw.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Nothing from Pet Sounds??

f you had been in charge, what would you have put on this compilation? A few I would have considered (totally disregarding sales, which means I'm automatically fired from the project):

I think it would have been great to start an album called "Warmth of the Sun" with "Meant for You"-- just the same warm feeling
Don't Back Down
Our Car Club
Caroline, No
Cuddle Up (Forever is great, but casual fans' jaws would drop if they heard Cuddle Up)
Til I Die

I would be more interested in new live stuff.

But it's not a bad compilation. A bit strange maybe, but not bad.

Cool! I'm really excited about the new mixes, but I dont' count on a stereo version of "409"...

Well, CN was more a Brian Wilson solo song, so I'm not too surprised.

"I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" to represent the lesser known side of Pet Sounds...and maybe "You Still Believe In Me"; "Wake The World", "Country Air" (stereo mix without noises), "Little Bird", "Time To Get Alone" (Hawthorne Version), "Long Promised Road", "Marcella" (In Concert Version), "Still I Dream Of It" for the late 70's, ...

I just love California from the California Saga, especially the single version. To some it may seem like a lazy rewrite of former glories and it probably is, but come on, it's great and perhaps even Alan Jardine's best ever song. Always had a thing for Don't Go Near The Water as well.
That said, it's kinda strange how Dennis Wilson always seems to have written just one decent song in the BB's entire career when it comes to compilations.

Personally, I think a few other DW songs are definitely worthy of a compilation. While maybe not a 'hits' collection (they weren't big hits, obviously), they do warrant a 'best of'. 'Celebrate the News', 'Be With Me'...'Cuddle Up'...I love those songs. And it's a crime that most people have never heard them because they don't make the compilations. I don't see a 'DW best of collection' legally making the light of day anytime soon...so it would at least be nice to see more of his stuff turn up on compilations. 'Forever' is an absolutely perfect, beautiful song...it's just not his only good song.

I'm going to go back on my opinion of 'Don't Go Near the Water' on my last post. I just re-listened to it...and for the first time in a long time, I actually really enjoyed it. Guess it depends on my frame of mind when I hear it. It is refreshing to see a lesser-known song on there, that's for sure.

This courtesy of Mark Linett via the blue board:

The new stereo mixes on "Warmth of the Sun" are........(drumroll please)

ALl SummerLong
Please Let Me Wonder
Let Him Run WIld
Then I Kissed Her
You're So Good To Me

Mark

This is the reason I am excited to pick this up.  I loved the stereo mixes given to us on Endless Harmony cd and the Hawthorne cds.  I can't wait to hear these.  Especially Let Him Run Wild.  Mark if you read this - thanks for the great work.  I love the original mono mixes but it is great to hear these songs opened up in stereo.  A new way to hear an old friend!

"Shut Down" is on SOUNDS OF SUMMER, naturally.

Good selection (outside of missing Caroline No)...

Apparently, they decided PET SOUNDS was covered well enuff with the special 40th anniversary releases, & all the other PS tours, etc....

... but wish it was in order ...

Order?  You mean chronologically?  The SOUNDS OF SUMMER disc wasn't strictly chrono either, so I guess they wanted to follow that format for this one too.

Which track would be the most recent?  "It's OK"?  "California Dreamin"?  Those wouldn't have been much of a 'finale'...  (The SOS comp. ended w/ "Good Vibrations.")

The "Cool, Cool Water/ Don't Go Near The Water" combo is the same sequence as on the Sunflower/ Surfs- Up twofer which at the time (2000) I remember some reviewer writing how appropriate it was.

Only one compilation aside from Hawthorne in my house and that is "Made In The USA". While maybe not the most definitive of their career, I like the flow of the early songs with their basic structure progressing to the more highly produced songs later.

Of course we all have 20 songs and a order we would put them in and nowdays with home equipment we can do just that.

I'm not too psyched about another compilation, with the exception of the new stereo mixes. But I'd rather pay $8 or so for a 5-song EP of the new mixes than $15 (or whatever) for all these songs that I already have (often more than once) in the same old mix.

Take out:

1. Then I Kissed Her
2. Disney Girls
3. Friends
4. Why Do Fools Fall In Love
5. Feel Flows
6. All This Is That
7. Don't Go Near The Water

Replace with:

1. Caroline, No
2. Our Prayer
3. Cabinessence
4. This Whole World
5. Add Some Music To Your Day
6. The Night Was So Young
7. Baby Blue

That is some of the worst sequencing I've ever seen. Mike definitely had his hands in this one.

Yes it would be interesting to know the politics of the choices. I  remember during the rooftop reunion Mike said during a interview that he and Brian had been meeting to choose tracks. I would guess the record exec's and their legal teams would want their snouts in the trough as well.Angry    Wonder if Al, Bruce and Dave have a vote.

Some of the more oddball choices are...well odd, but I think there are a few songs on there that'll surprise the casual fan.

And the remixes are awesome.  It's nice to have a more steady platform for new mixes that isn't a Hawthorne type set.  Can't wait to hear Let Him Run Wild and Please Let Me Wonder.
