Alot of people here are massive fans along the late-Bryrds, Gram Parsons, Gene Clark, Mike Nesmith trail. You don't hear as much about the Allmans, Skynyrd, Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, etc. It's only within the last two or three years that I've really begun to appreciate country music, so this stuff passed me by. I've got some Allmans and Skynyrd, but I don't really play them. Not that they're bad, the Allmans at their best are great, just not much of a priority for me. The future's always open though, now that I'm getting into country more.

Who do you like?

Allmans are the greatest, as their music covers all bases, jazz, rock, blues. country.
But Skynyrd are incredible as well.
Tony Joe White is my man, too.

Man, you met Tony Joe. That's sweet.

Haha! Creepy mate Smiley

Oi, he was so awesome...

The show finished, and a friend and I went up to join the small line forming outside his dressing room...  A man showed us his original Polk Salad Vinyl single, which was all beaten up and cool.  I was trying frantically to get my camera working, but the batteries were dead.  So atlast we entered, and there, in this small room, lit by candlelight sat two people.  A young, blonde woman, and Tony Joe (sunglasses still on, glass of red in hand).  He stood up as we entered the room (a true southern gentleman), shook our hands, and asked us our names.

" * choke * Joe..."

" Err... Matt"

"Nice to meet you sirs."

"Thanks fer playin' Rainy Night in Georgia Mr. White!"

"'ey that was you callin'?  Thanks for that Joe."

"Could you sign some stuff for us?"

"Sure thing."

So he signed a big poster ("Love that gator man!") and our CD covers...

Stood up again to shake our hands again when we were done, and out we went, into the cold night air... coming down.

What a legend he is.

Count me in. And pretty much any Southern Rock group. I've a soft spot for the stuff and I can't deny my white-thrash roots.

Good Tony Joe White stories. I actually had the honor of playing with him one night. I was appearing here in town with a songwriter named Alex Harvey (Ruben James, Delta Dawn, Rings, etc). I guess Tony Joe and Alex knew each other and Tony Joe showed up and sat in for several songs. He played Polk Salad and I think we all even got together and sang "Amazing Grace", which would up sounding something like "Soul Francisco".

Anyway, he just oozed coolness. He had some beat up old Strat he was playing - looked like it had been through the absolute ringer. But what a sound he got out of it!

Regarding southern rock, I think Skynrd's Ronnie Van Zant is one of the great voices. I can only imagine what he would have done if the place crash hadn't happened. I think some of their songs were silly, but his voice was always incredible.

I always enjoyed the Atlanta Rhythm Section....their hit's were Imaginary Lover and So into you. Champagne Jam is a
very good album. They have  a sorta Steely Dan feel to their music (not the lyrics). so it's southern rock but with a jazzy urban feel .IMHO
